The Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Never Rest Project Pvt. Ltd. (TNP Nepal) and the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) to promote research-based and data-driven management for sustainable tourism and environmental preservation in the Everest region.
The agreement was signed on July 20 by Sagar Pandey, President of TAAN, and Frederic Kauffmann, Director of TNP Nepal, on behalf of their respective organizations. The MoU establishes a collaborative framework to collect, analyse, and utilise data to better understand and address the growing environmental and tourism-related challenges in the Everest region.
TNP+ and EverData Platforms to Support Evidence-Based Decision-Making
Under the agreement, the initiative will utilise the TNP+ and EverData platforms to monitor key environmental and tourism indicators. The platforms will support the collection and analysis of data related to the impacts of tourism, climate change, waste management, and water quality.
By tracking changes over time, the platforms are expected to provide reliable information and key performance indicators (KPIs) that can help measure environmental trends and assess the effectiveness of various conservation and management initiatives. The data generated through the initiative will support communities, policymakers, tourism stakeholders, and other concerned institutions in making informed decisions and developing more effective responses to emerging challenges.
SPCC to Lead Implementation in Everest Region
The programme will initially focus on the Everest region, one of Nepal’s most important trekking and mountaineering destinations and a highly sensitive mountain ecosystem. The Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) will lead the implementation of the programme in the Everest region. The collaboration with TAAN is expected to strengthen coordination among tourism organisations, environmental institutions, local communities, and other stakeholders in addressing issues associated with increasing tourism activity and environmental change.
Vision to Expand Data-Driven Environmental Management Across Nepal By TAAN
The initiative has a broader vision of expanding the research and data-driven management model beyond the Everest region to other tourism destinations across Nepal.
Through the systematic use of data and measurable KPIs, TNP+ and EverData aim to equip local communities, policymakers, and stakeholders with the knowledge required to make informed decisions, drive continuous improvement, and advocate effectively for environmental protection and sustainable tourism development.
The MoU marks a significant step toward strengthening evidence-based approaches to tourism management and environmental conservation in Nepal’s mountain destinations.
