The Everest View Trail Race in Solukhumbu has received international recognition, giving a further boost to the district’s growing profile as a destination for adventure and sports tourism. Organised by Mapya Dudhkoshi Rural Municipality, the race has been officially recognized by the France-based international trail running organization Ultra Trail. The recognition is significant for an event that combines trail running with tourism promotion, nature conservation and sports development, while also bringing international attention to the landscape and cultural heritage of the region.
The International Trail Running Association (ITRA) has also awarded the race three points, based on the recognized trail’s distance and elevation. Such points contribute to runners’ qualification for other international trail running events, potentially making the Solukhumbu race more attractive to experienced runners from Nepal and abroad. The recognition could therefore help increase the event’s international visibility while creating another platform through which Solukhumbu can promote its mountain environment, cultural attractions and adventure tourism opportunities.
Race Connects Sports With Tourism And Local Heritage
Mapya Dudhkoshi Rural Municipality Chair Buddhi Kiran Rai said the international recognition demonstrated that the campaign to connect sports with tourism, nature, culture and adventure travel had achieved its objective. According to Rai, the recognition provides an additional opportunity to present the area’s natural and cultural heritage to an international audience. For the municipality, the trail race is therefore not limited to a sporting competition but is also being used as a means of promoting the destination and encouraging visitors to explore lesser-known parts of Solukhumbu.
The Everest trail race covers approximately 48 kilometres, with the route ranging from 1,803 metres to 3,181 metres in elevation. Competitors have a maximum of seven hours and 45 minutes to complete the course, making the event a demanding high-altitude trail running challenge. The route begins at the under-construction Korku Stadium and passes through Mahabhir, Siliguri, Kudham High Camp and Kailashnath Mahadev Temple before returning to the stadium.
Mountain Views Add To The Race’s Tourism Appeal
The trail offers runners an opportunity to experience some of the distinctive mountain scenery for which Solukhumbu is known. Along the route, participants can view Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Numbur, Thamserku and Mera Peak, combining the sporting challenge with exposure to the region’s Himalayan landscape.
