The MICHELIN Key is the Guide’s distinction for outstanding hotels, with properties receiving one, two or three Keys based on the quality and character of the overall guest experience. Located in Lower Mustang at an elevation of around 2,800 meters, the 29-suite property sits above Jomsom beneath the Nilgiri range. MICHELIN Recognition Highlights Mustang’s Distinctive Hospitality

The One MICHELIN Key recognition brings international attention to a hotel whose experience is closely connected to its Himalayan setting. Rather than separating the property from its surroundings, Shinta Mani Mustang has built its guest experience around the landscape and cultural character of the region. The property was designed under the creative direction of renowned designer Bill Bensley, with locally sourced stone, slate and wood incorporated into its architecture and interiors. Its suites are designed to offer views toward the surrounding Himalayan peaks, while locally inspired artwork, furnishings and design elements reflect the character of Mustang.

The hotel opened in August 2023 and is operated by Shinta Mani Hotels in partnership with Kathmandu-based Sherpa Hospitality Group. It is the group’s first internationally flagged property outside Cambodia and its first Shinta Mani property in Nepal. The MICHELIN Guide currently describes the property as a luxury hotel in Jomsom offering a combination of mountain surroundings, locally crafted interiors, wellness experiences and access to trekking, horseback riding and other activities in the Mustang region.

Luxury Experience Rooted in Mustang’s Culture

A major feature of the Shinta Mani Mustang experience is its emphasis on connecting visitors with local culture rather than offering luxury as an isolated resort experience. Guests can explore nearby villages, visit temples and monasteries, interact with local communities and experience Mustang’s distinctive traditions. The hotel also offers wilderness trekking, horseback riding and cultural experiences designed around the landscape and heritage of the region.

Wellness is another important part of the property’s offering. Its programs draw on traditional Himalayan knowledge, including treatments and consultations associated with Amchi, the traditional Tibetan medical practice. The hotel’s official information identifies local Amchi Tsewang Gyurme Gurung as part of its wellness experience. Food and dining are similarly connected to the destination, with the property highlighting locally sourced and sustainably produced ingredients, traditional meals prepared with local villagers and culinary experiences influenced by Mustang’s natural and cultural heritage. This approach gives the property a tourism model that combines luxury accommodation with cultural tourism, wellness, adventure and community-based experiences.

Award Brings Global Spotlight to Mustang

The MICHELIN Key comes at a time when Mustang is increasingly attracting attention as a destination for high-end, experiential and adventure tourism. The region is known for its dramatic Himalayan landscapes, ancient settlements, monasteries, distinctive Tibetan-influenced culture and proximity to the Tibetan plateau. Shinta Mani Mustang positions itself as a gateway to exploring this heritage while offering visitors a high-end base in the Lower Mustang region.

The property’s connection with local communities is also part of its tourism philosophy. Its official profile highlights partnerships with surrounding communities and efforts to ensure that tourism contributes to the preservation of local traditions and creates opportunities for residents. The recognition therefore extends beyond the hotel itself, putting greater international visibility on Mustang as a destination where luxury hospitality, Himalayan landscapes and living cultural heritage can come together.

Sherpa Hospitality Group CEO Namgyal Sherpa described the recognition as a proud moment for the property, its team and Mustang, emphasizing the region’s distinctive identity and heritage. For Nepal’s tourism industry, the One MICHELIN Key recognition adds another international accolade to the country’s growing luxury and experiential tourism sector. It also highlights the potential of destinations beyond Nepal’s major urban and trekking centers to attract travelers seeking high-quality hospitality combined with authentic local experiences.
