Nepal Hosts International Mountain Safety Symposium 2026 Ahead of UIAA General Assembly

Nepal has successfully concluded the 2026 International Mountain Safety Symposium, bringing together more than 60 mountaineers, doctors, rescuers, paramedics, insurance representatives and other mountain safety experts from different countries for two days of knowledge-sharing, practical training and international collaboration. Held on October 27–28, 2026, the symposium focused on strengthening mountain safety skills, exchanging professional experiences and promoting safer practices in mountaineering.

The two-day event combined discussions and professional knowledge-sharing with practical demonstrations and field-based training. Organized as part of the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) 2026 General Assembly programme, the symposium also highlighted Nepal’s role in international efforts to improve safety standards and cooperation in mountain activities.

Practical Mountain Safety Training in Kakani

On the second day, participants took part in practical demonstrations and field-based training at the Scout premises in Kakani, Nuwakot. The activities provided opportunities for participants to apply their knowledge in practical settings, strengthen their technical skills and learn from the experiences of professionals working in mountain safety, rescue and medical support.

The participation of mountaineers, doctors, rescuers and paramedics offered a platform for exchanging perspectives from different areas of mountain operations. Such practical learning opportunities are important in preparing professionals to respond to the challenges associated with high-altitude environments, where effective coordination, appropriate techniques and emergency preparedness play vital roles in protecting lives.

International Experts Share Knowledge and Experience

More than 60 participants from various countries attended the symposium, representing different professional fields connected with mountaineering and mountain safety. Their participation created opportunities to exchange experiences, discuss professional practices and strengthen connections among individuals and organisations working to improve safety in mountain environments.

Bringing together experts from mountaineering, medical services, rescue operations, and insurance can help promote a broader understanding of mountain safety challenges. Collaboration among these fields is particularly important in developing effective responses to emergencies and encouraging responsible mountaineering practices. The symposium provided an international platform for participants to learn from one another and reinforce the importance of cooperation in improving safety standards.

Certificates Distributed After Successful Completion

Certificates were distributed to participants following the successful completion of the symposium on October 28. The certification marked the conclusion of the two-day programme, which included both knowledge-sharing and practical training activities. The programme was designed to strengthen participants’ understanding of mountain safety while encouraging continued professional exchange. By combining practical demonstrations with international participation, the event supported efforts to build knowledge and skills that can contribute to safer climbing, rescue and other mountain-related activities.

Nepal to Host UIAA General Assembly 2026

The symposium was organised as part of the UIAA 2026 General Assembly programme, scheduled for October 30–31 in Kathmandu, Nepal. The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) is hosting the international event, bringing Nepal’s mountaineering community into focus as representatives and professionals gather for discussions related to the international climbing and mountaineering sector.

The successful conclusion of the International Mountain Safety Symposium marks an important step in promoting mountain safety, strengthening international cooperation and advancing safer mountaineering practices. Hosting the symposium alongside the UIAA General Assembly also provides an opportunity to highlight Nepal’s experience in mountaineering and its continued engagement with the global mountain community.
