Singapore Airlines Secures 4,800 Tonnes of Next Generation Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Singapore Airlines has signed an agreement to purchase up to 4,800 tonnes of next generation sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Aether Fuels over three years, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2028. Announced on October 28, 2026, the agreement makes Singapore Airlines the first airline to purchase fuel from Project Beacon, Aether’s commercial production facility being developed in Singapore.

The agreement marks the airline’s first purchase of sustainable aviation fuel produced using technology that converts waste carbon feedstocks into aviation fuel. It also supports Singapore’s efforts to develop new lower carbon fuel production capabilities and strengthen its position as a global aviation hub advancing the transition towards more sustainable air travel.

Project Beacon to Produce Fuel From Waste Carbon

Project Beacon is being developed at Aster’s refining complex on Pulau Bukom in Singapore. The facility will use feedstocks such as biomethane and industrial waste gases to produce sustainable aviation fuel through Aether’s proprietary Aurora technology, offering an alternative to conventional production pathways that rely on more limited lipid based feedstocks.

The technology builds on the Fischer Tropsch process to convert waste derived gases into liquid aviation fuel. The fuel produced at Project Beacon is intended to be certified under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), the international framework supporting the management of aviation-related carbon emissions.

Deliveries Scheduled to Begin in 2028

Under the agreement, Singapore Airlines will purchase up to 4,800 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel over a three year period, with deliveries beginning in 2028. The purchase represents a concrete commercial commitment to a new fuel production pathway, although the facility is still under development and the deliveries have not yet begun.

The agreement builds on an earlier memorandum of understanding signed by Singapore Airlines Group and Aether Fuels in February 2025 to explore future supplies of sustainable aviation fuel. The new purchase agreement advances that cooperation by establishing a specific volume and delivery period for fuel from Project Beacon.

Singapore Airlines Advances Its Net Zero Ambition

Singapore Airlines has identified the development and adoption of sustainable aviation fuel as important to its ambition of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The airline’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Lee Wen Fen, said the agreement demonstrates demand for emerging lower carbon fuel pathways and supports efforts to expand sustainable aviation fuel production.

The airline also intends to continue working with global partners to increase fuel availability and strengthen the aviation industry’s sustainability ecosystem. Sustainable aviation fuel is considered one of the options for reducing aviation’s lifecycle emissions, although its wider adoption depends on production capacity, availability, cost and supporting infrastructure.

Aether Plans Larger-Scale Commercial Production

Aether Fuels plans to start operating its first large scale commercial plant by 2031, with a production capacity at least ten times greater than that of Project Beacon. The planned expansion is intended to increase the company’s next generation sustainable aviation fuel output and help bring waste carbon based production technology to a larger commercial scale.

Aether cofounder and Chief Executive Officer Conor Madigan said the agreement provides an important signal of committed demand from a major international airline. The partnership also reflects Singapore’s efforts to develop an aviation decarbonization ecosystem through its refining and aviation infrastructure, investment support and sustainability policies.
