A severe flash flood struck Thame Village, located in Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality-5, this afternoon, causing significant damage. The flood reportedly swept away a hotel and two houses in the area.
Mingma Sherpa, the Chairperson of Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality, informed that the flood might have been triggered by the burst of a glacial lake near Thame. Chief District Officer (CDO) Devi Pandey confirmed that the flood had caused damage in Thame Village and led to an increased water flow in the Dudh Koshi River. Residents along the riverbanks have been alerted to remain cautious due to the rising water levels.
According to CDO Pandey, security personnel have been dispatched from Namche to Thame to assess the situation. Lama Kaji Sherpa, a local from Namche, mentioned that it takes about five hours on foot to reach Thame from Namche. The locals suspect that the glacial lake at the Tasi Lapcha Base Camp might have burst, causing the flood. However, officials and the police have indicated that it will take some time to obtain a precise report on the extent of the damage.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a notice, alerting that a large flood has been reported in the Thame area of Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality-5. The department has urged residents living along the banks of the Dudh Koshi River, especially from Jorsalle downwards in Solukhumbu District, to exercise extreme caution and remain safe until further notice.
