The Mundum Trail, now recognized among Nepal’s top 100 tourist destinations, is swiftly becoming a major attraction for both domestic and international travelers. Known for its accessibility and scenic beauty in the eastern region, the trail has seen a notable increase in visitor numbers, prompting Temkemaiyung Rural Municipality to focus on its further development and accessibility.
In a recent initiative, a team of local stakeholders conducted an on-site inspection from Chakewa Bhanjyang, at an altitude of 2,351 meters, to Silichung Peak, the highest point at 4,153 meters, to assess necessary enhancements to the trail. Saroj Basnet, Chairperson of the municipality, emphasized the growing appeal of Mundum Trail as a favored trekking destination and the municipality’s dedication to expanding its infrastructure and facilities to accommodate the rising tourist influx.
Chairperson Basnet stated, “Mundum Trail is becoming a sought-after destination, and we are committed to further development efforts. With the recent inspection from Chakewa to Silichung Peak, we aim to address any emerging challenges and enhance visitor comfort.”
Deputy Chairperson Ramadevi Rai also emphasized the municipality’s focus on tourism and agriculture, given the region’s natural beauty. “During our field visit, we identified various areas that need attention to ensure a hassle-free experience for travelers. We’ve established a tourism information center at Chakewa to provide visitors with essential information on the trail, its geographical features, and lodging options for a safe and enjoyable journey.”
The trail offers breathtaking views of prominent peaks, including Mount Everest, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and several others, making it a preferred choice for trekkers who enjoy panoramic landscapes of towering Himalayan peaks and the lush hills of the Terai.
Chief Administrative Officer Biken Poudel highlighted the trail’s attractions, including cultural landmarks associated with Kirat traditions and lush pastures with yak and sheep herds, adding to the charm of the journey. He stated, “In a short time, Mundum Trail has become a popular choice for visitors. We have identified areas that require further promotion and development, and the municipality is working systematically to enhance its appeal.”
The trail is most popular during the months of Bhadra, Ashwin, Kartik, and Mangsir, with a balanced climate that avoids the extreme cold of the high mountains and the heat of the plains, according to Ward Chairperson Purna Prasad Rai. The trail’s name, derived from the ‘Mundum’ cultural tradition of the Kirat Rai community, reflects the deep cultural heritage embedded in this trekking route.
