Indreni Theatre Pokhara’s production, the play Aaturkaal, written and directed by Kedar Nath Paudel, is set to be staged in Japan. The play will be performed on April 12 and 13 at the Underground Theater in Itabashi and on April 14 at Nakano Zero Hall in Tokyo.
Aaturkaal presents a psychological portrayal of the suffering, struggles, displacement, class conflict, and tragic moments of war experienced by Nepali society.
The play powerfully depicts the hardships, separations, dreams, social discrimination, and the inevitable destiny faced by its characters throughout different phases of life. Lead actor Kiran Chapagain delivers a deeply impactful performance.
A talented figure in Nepal’s theater scene, Chapagain has studied drama in countries like Europe, the USA, and Canada. His solo performances in plays like Anuttar have vividly brought to life the struggles of individuals battling against fate, life, and the future.
Previously, Aaturkaal was staged at Pokhara Theatre from February 22 to 32, 2021, and at the Russian House in Kathmandu from September 7 to 9, 2023. Praised by audiences at every staging, the play revolves around the memories of an elderly character (played by Kiran Chapagain). As memories begin to haunt him in the later years of life, he is compelled to relive his past. The play movingly captures moments of childhood happiness, familial separation, social discrimination, displacement, struggle, and ultimately, the loneliness of old age.
Earlier, director Kedar Nath Paudel’s play Bhrun was also staged in Japan. With this new staging, Nepali theater is expected to leave a deeper mark on the international stage. The play is anticipated to captivate not only the Nepali diaspora but also Japanese theater enthusiasts.
Indreni Theatre, based in Pokhara, is a prestigious drama institution known for staging original plays that highlight various aspects of Nepali society. Its sixth production, Sapana Deluxe Coach, explores events unfolding on a passenger bus traveling from Pokhara to Kathmandu.
