The Airline Operators Association of Nepal (AOAN) has announced that it will continue helicopter flights in the Khumbu region despite a recent circular issued by Sagarmatha National Park prohibiting such operations.
In a press release on Thursday, the AOAN clarified that it is not obligated to adhere to the ban imposed by the park. “Helicopters are flying in the area with the approval of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, and the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN). Flights outside the park’s jurisdiction are not subject to its directives,” stated the release.
The AOAN emphasized that its member airlines will maintain their current flight operations to destinations in the Khumbu region after obtaining necessary permissions from CAAN. The association also urged its member companies to continue operations while adhering to applicable laws and regulations.
The dispute arose last Wednesday when Sagarmatha National Park issued a notification to AOAN, asserting its decision to prohibit flights in the region. However, the AOAN’s statement reflects its firm opposition to the park’s directive and underscores its reliance on approvals from higher aviation authorities.
The continuation of flights is significant for the Khumbu region, as helicopter services are crucial for transporting tourists, goods, and emergency supplies to remote areas, including destinations near Mount Everest. The AOAN’s stance highlights the complex balance between aviation operations and conservation regulations in one of Nepal’s most iconic regions.
