Chitwan National Park Initiates Grassland Management Program

Chitwan National Park has commenced its grassland management program for the current fiscal year, targeting the management of 250 hectares of grassland. According to Abinash Thapa Magar, the park’s information officer, the project has begun with a budget allocation of NPR 3.75 million. The initiative aims to ensure sustainable grazing areas for wildlife across locations such as Kasara, Lamital, Sukhivhar, Bhimle, Dumariya, and Budhi Rapti.

Thapa Magar stated, “Every year, grassland management is carried out to provide adequate grazing areas for wildlife.” The program involves utilizing specialized grass-cutting equipment and hiring workers to systematically manage the fields. Currently, the work is focused on the Kasara region, with 60 hectares of grassland management already completed.

Chitwan National Park, covering an expansive area of 952.63 square kilometers, is home to approximately 8,955.2 hectares of land deemed suitable for grasslands. Last fiscal year, a budget of NPR 4.07 million facilitated the management of 370 hectares of grasslands. However, Thapa Magar noted a significant reduction in budget allocation for such initiatives in recent years, particularly compared to the pre-COVID period.

Despite financial constraints, the park remains committed to preserving its grasslands, which play a crucial role in supporting the park’s diverse wildlife and maintaining ecological balance.
