Dhorpatan: Rudratal Emerging as a Prominent Tourist Attraction

Rudratal, located near the Dhorpatan Valley and alongside the Burtibang-Dhorpatan road, has been gaining popularity among both domestic and international tourists. The lake, which holds religious significance, has recently become a priority for conservation efforts led by Dhorpatan Municipality.

To enhance the lake’s preservation, the municipality has allocated NPR 2.5 million for the current fiscal year, according to Deputy Mayor Dhan Bahadur Kayat (Kalyan). He stated that Rudratal, situated in the heart of a dense forest, is naturally beautiful, and efforts are being made to make it more accessible and well-managed.

With the designated budget, plans for this year include constructing a railing-equipped pathway from the road to the lake, installing a drinking water system, and fencing the area, Kayat confirmed. While conservation work has been undertaken in the past, the lake still lacks proper infrastructure. Discussions are ongoing to install clean drinking water facilities and resting areas for visitors.

“This lake is not just a natural site but also holds religious significance. Previously, due to the lack of road connectivity, it remained obscure. Now, with the road leading directly to Dhorpatan Valley passing near the lake, every tourist visiting the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve stops by Rudratal. That’s why we are working on its conservation. Some projects will be completed this year, and more will follow in the coming years,” Kayat added.

The lake is also a habitat for wildlife, and tourists can observe animals such as deer and Himalayan ghorals drinking water from its banks. This proximity to wildlife has enhanced the appeal of the lake, allowing visitors to experience nature up close. Additionally, local beliefs suggest that bathing in the water flowing from Rudratal helps prevent skin-related diseases, further boosting its appeal as a tourist destination.

Since being connected to Nepal’s only Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve road, Rudratal has attracted a growing number of visitors, according to Ward No. 9 resident Bir Bahadur Ghartimagar. He mentioned that a decade ago, the lake was largely deserted, but now it has become a bustling attraction. Ghartimagar emphasized the need for further development, including gardens, waiting areas, restrooms, and drinking water facilities to accommodate the increasing number of visitors.

“Rudratal is one of the most renowned lakes in this region. Nestled within a dense forest, its beauty is unparalleled. However, more promotional and conservation efforts are needed,” Ghartimagar stated. “The lake’s water level has been declining, but the cause remains unclear. If the lake dries up, it will lose its existence entirely. Authorities must take immediate steps to investigate and address this issue.”

As Rudratal continues to gain attention, the municipality and local stakeholders are determined to promote sustainable tourism while ensuring environmental conservation. Future plans include additional infrastructure development and further studies on maintaining the lake’s ecological balance. With its natural charm, wildlife encounters, and religious significance, Rudratal is poised to become a must-visit destination for tourists exploring the Dhorpatan region.
