The Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) has officially opened the 2025 Everest climbing season with the successful completion of route fixing through the treacherous Khumbu Icefall. SPCC CEO Tshering Sherpa announced that the team of Icefall Doctors reached the Nuptse face after laying 2,200 meters of rope in just one day.

Despite challenging weather conditions, the team worked non-stop for 18 hours to ensure the route was safe and ready.

The eight-member team of Icefall Doctors had departed from Namche Bazaar on March 9 to begin preparations for the climbing route up to Camp II. Their work is critical for climbers aiming to summit Mt. Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse this spring.

SPCC, appointed by the government, is responsible for overseeing both the Icefall route maintenance and waste management efforts in the Everest region. “The Icefall Doctors work tirelessly, fixing ladders and ropes to ensure climbers have a secure path,” said Sherpa. Each year, SPCC plays a vital role in enabling safe ascents of the world’s highest mountains.
