Nestled amidst lush pine forests, the serene Kshama Lake in Mustang captivates visitors with its circular, sapphire-blue waters and a tranquil ambiance. Located in Gharpajhong Rural Municipality-5, this picturesque destination lies at an altitude of 3,450 meters above sea level, offering a mesmerizing reflection of the eastern-facing Nilgiri Himal.
To reach Kshama Lake, travelers can take a 45-minute vehicle ride followed by an hour-long trek from Jomsom via Thini. The lake, surrounded by peace and quiet, is complemented by the melody of chirping birds and the sight of grazing sheep, yaks, and horses nearby. A smaller, similarly circular lake sits just above the main one, adding to the area’s charm.
The Story Behind the Name
Local legend has it that the lake was named “Kshama,” meaning “forgiveness,” as villagers traditionally gathered here to reflect on their mistakes and pledge not to repeat them. In respect for its spiritual significance, locals refrain from using garlic or onions in the area. Previously a favored picnic spot for the youth, Kshama Lake has, in recent years, become a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists.
A Rising Attraction
Anish Gauchan, an employee at Sintamani Hotel in Jomsom, shared that Kshama Lake attracts nature enthusiasts who enjoy leisurely strolls, views of Nilgiri Himal, and watching snow avalanches from the mountains. “We’ve included Kshama Lake in our five-day Mustang travel package, and tourists have given us positive feedback,” said Gauchan, who recently guided two Russian and one Nepali tourist to the site.
Plans for Development
Efforts are underway to establish Kshama Lake as an auxiliary destination to Jomsom to extend tourists’ stay in Mustang. According to Gharpajhong Rural Municipality Chairperson Mohan Singh Lalchan, ongoing initiatives include promoting the lake’s spiritual and natural significance and constructing a trekking trail connecting Kshama Lake to Tilicho Lake, enhancing its appeal.
Strategic Importance
Near the lake lies Kaishang, home to a high-altitude training center of the Nepalese Army. The site carries historical and strategic significance, having once been a camp for expelling Khampa rebels from Tibet. While a road leads to Kaishang, alternative trekking paths have been created to balance security concerns and tourist access.
Challenges and Infrastructure Needs
Despite its allure, Kshama Lake faces challenges during the monsoon season due to flooding along the Thini Khola riverbanks. Visitors have also highlighted the need for public restrooms and clean drinking water facilities in the lake area, urging local authorities to improve amenities for an enhanced tourist experience.
With its stunning scenery and peaceful surroundings, Kshama Lake promises an unforgettable experience for those who venture to this hidden gem in the heart of Mustang.
