The Sherpa community celebrates the cultural festival Gyalpo Lhosar today with various programs on the occasion of Falgun Shukla Pratipada every year.

The Sherpa community is observing the 2152nd Gyalpo Lhosar as their New Year. Gyalpo Lhosar is divided into 12 categories based on the zodiac signs: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon (Cloud), Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Bird, Dog, and Boar.

This festival is grandly celebrated from Falgun Shukla Pratipada to the full moon day with various programs. According to researcher Tika Sherpa, The Lhosar was initially celebrated as a spring festival during the reign of the 9th King of Tibet, Ude Gungyal, and later became known as this Lhosar. Some pronounce it as Gyalpo, while others say Gyalbo.

Previously, This Lhosar was celebrated in 12 districts of the Himalayan region, but now it is observed in 22 districts due to the migration of the Sherpa community. The Gurung community has already celebrated their Tamu Lhosar on Poush 15, and the Tamang community observed Sonam Losar on Magh Shukla Pratipada.
