Heavy Snowfall Disrupts Daily Life in Humla’s Namkha Rural Municipality

Continuous heavy snowfall since Poush 12 has blanketed the northern region of Humla, particularly in Namkha Rural Municipality, with over a foot of snow accumulation. The persistent snowfall for three consecutive days has severely disrupted road and air transportation, along with daily activities in the area.

Former Chairperson of Namkha Rural Municipality, Bishnu Lama, shared updates over a phone call, stating, “Cattle such as cows and sheep are confined to shelters, while yaks have been left in open areas. Traveling between villages has become challenging, and transporting goods from the district headquarters in Simikot has also been hampered.”

Adding to the difficulties, all flights to and from Simikot Airport have been suspended, as confirmed by the Civil Aviation Office in Simikot. The extreme cold has forced elderly residents and children to gather around fires to keep warm. Locals have reported that temperatures have been unusually harsh, especially during the mornings and evenings this year.

The ongoing snowfall highlights the vulnerability of remote mountainous regions to extreme weather, emphasizing the need for robust infrastructure and emergency preparedness in such areas.
