Lumbini Province’s hotel and restaurant industry has emerged as a significant employment generator, providing jobs to 9,852 individuals, according to the recently published ‘National Hotel and Restaurant Survey 2080’ by the Central Statistics Office.
The survey highlights that a total of 20,158 establishments contribute to this employment figure. However, a concerning trend is that less than half of these workers receive regular wages. The study categorizes accommodation and food service businesses under the Nepal Standard Industrial Classification, encompassing a wide range of establishments from five-star hotels to small roadside snack stalls.
At the national level, Bagmati Province leads in employment within the hospitality sector, with 62,405 salaried workers. Other provinces, including Koshi, Madhesh, Gandaki, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim, also report varying levels of employment in the industry.
The survey further reveals that across Nepal, 142,233 establishments provide salaried jobs to 16,459 individuals. In total, 387,747 people, including entrepreneurs and unpaid family workers, are engaged in the sector. Over the past year, the hospitality industry has spent Rs 20.615 billion on employment, with family-run restaurants constituting a significant share of the business landscape.
Unlike the previous survey conducted in 2060, which focused primarily on hotels and lodges, this latest study conducted in 2079 BS expands its scope to include homestays, hostels, catering services, and party palaces. The data collection process spanned from 1st Shrawan 2079 BS to 30th Ashadh 2080 BS, ensuring a comprehensive analysis of the industry’s workforce and economic contributions.
Deputy Chief Statistics Officer Dr. Hemraj Regmi emphasized that this is the first extensive survey covering the entire hospitality industry. The findings aim to offer valuable insights into the sector’s economic impact, assisting policymakers and businesses in making informed decisions to drive employment and economic growth.
