Linking Sports and Tourism: Gandaki Province’s Initiatives in Pokhara

Chief Minister of Gandaki Province, Surendra Raj Pandey, has highlighted the provincial government’s efforts to integrate sports with tourism in Pokhara, Nepal’s tourism capital. Speaking at the inauguration of the 25th edition of the football tournament organized by Adarsha Club at Bhandar Dhik Stadium in Lekhnath, Pokhara, Chief Minister Pandey shared the vision of establishing a high-altitude sports ground in Mustang to attract international tourists.

He emphasized that Pokhara already offers adventure sports like paragliding and canyoning, which are popular among foreign visitors. The government plans to improve their management and further enhance the city’s appeal. Acknowledging the growing opportunities for athletes in Nepal, he noted the provision of monthly stipends for players, aimed at making their lives easier.

“The provincial government is committed to the development of sports. We will promote the spirit of sports among the youth while also focusing on strengthening national unity and guiding the younger generation towards a positive path through sports,” said Chief Minister Pandey.

The ongoing football tournament, running until December 14, features eight teams. In the opening match, the host team, Adarsha Club, defeated ANFA Tanahun 1-0.

The tournament offers a prize of NPR 425,525 for the winners and NPR 225,525 for the runners-up, along with medals. Club President Padam Gurung stated that the event is estimated to cost NPR 5 million and aims to enhance the skill level and morale of players while fostering sports tourism in Lekhnath.
