Weather Alert: Light Rain and Snowfall Bring Chill to Hilly Regions

Nepal is currently experiencing the influence of local winds, bringing about a variation in weather patterns across different regions of the country. According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the weather is expected to remain partly to generally cloudy in the hilly regions, while most of the Terai and lower plains will enjoy fair weather conditions.

This afternoon, the Division has forecasted the likelihood of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning at a few places in the hilly regions. In addition, isolated showers are expected in one or two locations in the remaining parts of the country. The weather activity is part of a transitional pattern brought about by local atmospheric disturbances, which typically influence Nepal’s mid-spring climate.

The high hilly and mountainous areas, particularly in provinces such as Gandaki, Bagmati, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim, are also likely to witness light precipitation. There is a chance of snowfall occurring in isolated pockets of the mountainous regions, particularly at higher elevations, which may be of interest to trekkers and locals residing in those zones.

As per the evening forecast, the weather conditions will largely remain consistent. The hilly regions, including the Koshi Province, are expected to see partly to generally cloudy skies through the night. The rest of the country, especially the lowlands and urban centers in the Terai region, are likely to experience mostly clear skies.

Moreover, light to moderate rain along with thunder and lightning may occur at one or two places across the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim provinces during nighttime hours. The meteorological office also forecasts chances of light snowfall in some parts of the high hilly and mountainous zones during the night, which may slightly affect travel routes and visibility in these areas.

The Division has advised residents, travelers, and local authorities to stay updated on weather forecasts, especially those living or planning to travel to elevated regions where weather conditions can change rapidly. While no severe weather warnings have been issued, the occurrence of thunder and lightning poses a minor risk, and the public is encouraged to take necessary precautions during outdoor activities.

Such local wind-driven patterns are typical during this transitional season in Nepal and usually result in sporadic rain, localized cloud buildup, and occasional drops in temperature in elevated zones. Though the rainfall brings temporary relief from the rising daytime temperatures, it also introduces localized hazards such as slippery trails in trekking regions and reduced visibility in high-altitude travel areas.

Farmers in the hilly and mountainous regions may find this rainfall beneficial for winter crop cultivation. However, unseasonal snowfall in high-altitude settlements could temporarily affect livestock and transportation of goods, particularly in remote and snow-sensitive regions.

The Meteorological Forecasting Division will continue to monitor the evolving weather conditions and provide updates as needed. It is recommended that the public and tourists regularly check the Department’s official website or mobile alerts for the latest updates, especially during the current season when weather changes can be sudden and unpredictable.

In summary, while the majority of Nepal will experience fair weather, especially in the lowland and urban regions, those in the hills and mountains should remain cautious due to expected rain, thunder, lightning, and possible snowfall in select high-altitude locations.
