Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Gautam Buddha and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been ranked 9th on the New York Times’ list of 52 must-visit destinations for 2025. This recognition is expected to boost both domestic and international tourism while promoting Lumbini’s cultural and historical significance globally.
Sanuraja Shakya, Member Secretary of the Lumbini Development Trust, described the inclusion of Lumbini in this prestigious list as a major achievement for Nepal. “This is a task that Nepal could not have achieved even with significant expenditure. It is crucial to preserve this honor,” Shakya emphasized.

According to the Trust, over 1.1 million visitors explored Lumbini in 2024, a number likely to rise following this recognition. The Trust expects that not only Buddhist pilgrims but also travelers from diverse backgrounds will be drawn to Lumbini, further enhancing its global appeal.
Lumbini’s serene environment and historical significance continue to captivate tourists worldwide. Known for its religious and cultural importance, the site has long been a favorite among visitors to Nepal. Tourism professionals believe that this acknowledgment by the New York Times will significantly contribute to attracting more tourists, bolstering Nepal’s tourism sector.
