Nestled amidst dense forests and towering cliffs, the Mahabhir Waterfall in Nishi Khola Rural Municipality-3, Baglung, remains a largely undiscovered natural wonder. The area, known for its pristine air and tranquil environment, is further enlivened by the melodious chirping of birds. The waterfall cascades down from a height surrounded by massive cliffs, which locals refer to as “Mahabhir,” giving the waterfall its name.
Despite its natural beauty, the Mahabhir Waterfall has yet to attract significant tourist attention. While residents occasionally visit, it remains off the radar for external tourists. Located at an altitude of approximately 2,500 meters above sea level, the waterfall is not far in terms of distance, but the lack of proper trails and roads makes access difficult. The waterfall lies between Bohoragaun and Yangmyang, areas where locals traditionally gather honey from cliffs, making it a prime spot for “honey hunting.”
Binod Bishwakarma, a resident of Nishi Khola Rural Municipality-3, believes that with proper attention from the local government, Mahabhir Waterfall could become a popular tourist destination. “The waterfall is beautiful, but the challenging access routes have kept it hidden from the outside world. A well-constructed trekking path would help attract visitors,” Bishwakarma said. He noted that while locals occasionally visit the area to graze livestock, the lack of publicity has hindered its potential as a tourist attraction.
“Smaller waterfalls in other areas see a steady flow of tourists, but despite being much larger, Mahabhir Waterfall has been overlooked. If the government could invest in promotion and infrastructure, it would undoubtedly draw more visitors,” he added.
Ramesh Bikram Shahi, the Ward Chairperson of Nishi Khola Rural Municipality-3, mentioned that plans are underway to develop infrastructure around the waterfall to promote it as a tourist destination. However, he pointed out that due to the region’s rugged terrain, constructing access roads and trails would require significant funding, necessitating collaboration with the provincial and central governments.
Chairperson Shahi also highlighted that the limited budget at the ward’s disposal has so far prevented the development of necessary infrastructure around the waterfall. The Mahabhir Waterfall is approximately a three-hour trek from Jhivakhola, located in Nishi Khola Rural Municipality-4, along the Mid-Hill Highway.
The Mahabhir Waterfall, with its serene beauty and potential for adventure tourism, awaits the attention and investment needed to become a must-visit destination in Baglung.
