Monsoon Impact Subsiding, Isolated Heavy Rainfall Forecast

The impact of the monsoon wind across Nepal has gradually weakened, signaling the seasonal transition toward more stable weather conditions. According to the Weather Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the intensity of the monsoon has subsided, and even local winds are now exerting only partial influence on weather patterns in most regions of the country.

The seasonal decline comes after months of rainfall that brought both relief to agricultural activities and challenges such as floods and landslides in several areas. While the monsoon’s dominance is waning, the Division cautioned that isolated areas are still at risk of heavy showers.

Isolated Heavy Rainfall Expected in Koshi and Bagmati

Despite the easing of monsoon winds, weather forecasters have predicted heavy rainfall in one to two places of Koshi and Bagmati provinces today. These areas remain under close observation due to the possibility of localized heavy showers that could lead to waterlogging and minor disruptions.

Meteorologists highlighted that the likelihood of heavy rainfall in specific pockets of these provinces is consistent with the transitional phase of the monsoon, where uneven and localized precipitation is common. Residents, particularly those living near rivers, streams, and landslide-prone zones, have been advised to remain cautious during this period.

Cloudy Skies in Hilly Regions

The weather service further reported that the hilly regions of the country will experience generally cloudy conditions throughout the day. Cloud cover will dominate the skies in areas of Koshi, Gandaki, Bagmati, and Lumbini provinces. Meanwhile, the rest of the country is expected to remain partly cloudy, with intermittent sunshine breaking through in the plains and western regions.

Cloudy conditions are typical during the end of the monsoon season and can contribute to sporadic showers, especially in elevated terrains where moisture-laden winds interact with hills and mountains.

Moderate Rainfall in Hills and Plains

Forecasts indicate that moderate rainfall is likely in a few places in the hilly regions of Koshi, Gandaki, Bagmati, and Lumbini provinces. Additionally, one to two locations in the southern plains could also experience moderate precipitation.

While such rainfall is less intense compared to peak monsoon downpours, it remains significant for agriculture, particularly for paddy cultivation, which relies heavily on consistent water supply. Farmers in central and eastern Nepal may find this moderate rainfall beneficial for the final stages of the crop cycle.

Nighttime Weather Conditions

Looking ahead, the Weather Forecasting Division has predicted that tonight will be generally cloudy in both the hilly regions and the southern plains. This indicates that sporadic rainfall may continue in some areas overnight, though widespread heavy precipitation is not expected. The western plains and some midwestern areas could enjoy relatively clearer skies.

Such nighttime cloud cover also helps moderate temperatures, preventing extreme fluctuations between day and night, a common phenomenon in this transitional weather phase.

Seasonal Context and Precautionary Notes

As Nepal moves closer to the official withdrawal of the monsoon, weather experts emphasize the importance of remaining prepared for sudden and localized downpours. Even though the broader monsoon system is weakening, the country remains vulnerable to risks such as flash floods, river swelling, and landslides in sensitive areas.

Local authorities in Koshi and Bagmati provinces, in particular, have been urged to remain vigilant and alert communities about potential hazards, given the forecast for heavy rainfall in isolated spots.

Outlook Ahead

With the monsoon slowly fading, Nepal is expected to transition toward the autumn season in the coming weeks. This period typically brings more stable weather, clearer skies, and moderate temperatures, making it one of the most favorable times of the year for agriculture, festivals, and tourism activities.

However, until the monsoon officially retreats, sporadic rainfall will continue to feature in daily forecasts. Meteorologists recommend that the public, especially travelers and farmers, remain attentive to regular weather updates to avoid disruptions caused by sudden rain events.
