Mundhum Trail Embarks on a New Horizon: Targeting One Lakh Tourists in 2025

The Mundhum Trail, recognized among Nepal’s top 100 must-visit destinations, is witnessing a surge in development efforts as local governments from three districts—Bhojpur, Khotang, and Solukhumbu—join hands to promote the trail under the banner of “Mundhum Visit Year 2025.” This ambitious initiative aims to attract 100,000 domestic and international tourists to the scenic trail, famed for its cultural, natural, and spiritual significance.

The Temkemaiyung Rural Municipality Chairperson, Saroj Basnet, expressed optimism about the joint efforts, emphasizing, “To enhance and expand the Mundhum Trail, we are gearing up for Mundhum Visit Year 2025. Our collective goal is to bring one lakh tourists to the region.”

Cultural Festival to Boost Promotion

As part of the promotion, a “Cultural, Tourism, and Agriculture Fair” is set to take place from January 15 to 19, 2025, in Temkemaiyung-4, Nagi. The event will highlight local products, showcase Kirati culture, and unveil a joint policy paper by the municipalities along the trail. The initiative underscores the commitment of the local governments to sustainable tourism development.

Strategic Collaboration

The collaborative efforts involve multiple municipalities, including Temkemaiyung, Bhojpur, Shadanand, and Salpa Silichho in Bhojpur; Kepilasgadhi, Sakela, and Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi in Khotang; and Mahakulung in Solukhumbu. This synergy has been strengthened through strategic meetings, the latest of which was held on November 21, 2024, in Chakewa, Bhojpur.

Chief Administrative Officer of Temkemaiyung Rural Municipality, Biken Poudel, stated that a budget of NPR 18.5 million, supported by the Swiss government, federal, provincial, and local bodies, has been allocated for infrastructure enhancements. These include building rest areas, installing water facilities, and improving sanitation along the trail.

Trail Attractions

The Mundhum Trail is a treasure trove for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts. The journey offers breathtaking views of over 24 majestic peaks, including Everest, Makalu, Kanchanjunga, and Lhotse. The trail is dotted with Kirati cultural landmarks, expansive grassy meadows, and serene yak pastures, providing a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Travelers can also trek to Silichung Peak, the highest point in Bhojpur, at an altitude of 4,153 meters. The region’s moderate climate, neither too cold like the Himalayas nor too warm like the lowlands, makes it an ideal destination for trekking.

Training and Preparation

To ensure a safe and enriching experience for visitors, 23 local guides have been trained in basic trekking skills. According to Temkemaiyung-3 Ward Chairperson Purna Prasad Rai, these efforts have created a secure environment for tourists, allowing them to explore the trail with confidence.

Seasonal and Natural Appeal

The trail experiences its peak tourist inflow during September to December, thanks to its pleasant weather and spectacular scenery. Tourists can marvel at panoramic views of towering mountain ranges, rolling hills, and the sprawling Terai plains while immersing themselves in the unique Kirati culture.

A Path Rooted in Heritage

The Mundhum Trail derives its name from the ancient Kirati cultural scripture, “Mundhum,” reflecting the spiritual and cultural essence of the region. This profound connection to Kirati heritage adds another layer of significance to the trail, making it a destination that offers more than just natural beauty—it provides a journey through Nepal’s rich cultural tapestry.

As the Mundhum Visit Year 2025 approaches, the collective efforts of local governments and stakeholders are poised to transform this trail into a premier destination, contributing significantly to Nepal’s tourism landscape.
