The Nepalese government has added six new peaks to the list of 8,000-meter high mountains. The Department of Tourism recently updated its website, incorporating profiles of these six new peaks into the list.
The new additions are: Yalung Khang (8,505 meters), Yalung Khang West (8,077 meters), Kanchenjunga Central (8,473 meters), Kanchenjunga South (8,476 meters), Lhotse Middle (8,410 meters), and Lhotse Shar (8,400 meters).

According to the Department’s Director, Liladhar Awasthi, 57 additional peaks have also been included in the updated profile, providing details about these mountains. However, to gain international recognition for these six new peaks, further work is needed. Efforts must be made with relevant bodies like the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (UIAA) to obtain global acknowledgment.
There are 14 mountains globally that exceed 8,000 meters in height, eight of which are located in Nepal. If these six newly included peaks gain international recognition, the total number of 8,000-meter peaks in the world will reach 20, with Nepal having 14 of them.
