Nepal Increases Insurance Coverage for Mountaineering Workers

The Nepalese government has revised the insurance policies for workers involved in mountaineering expeditions under the Mountaineering (Sixth Amendment) Regulations 2081, significantly increasing their coverage.

According to the new provisions:

Leaders, mountain guides, and high-altitude workers will now receive NPR 2 million in insurance coverage, an increase from the previous NPR 1.5 million.Base camp workers will now be insured for NPR 1.5 million, doubling the previous coverage of NPR 800,000. Liaison officers, who oversee mountaineering expeditions, must also have NPR 1.5 million in insurance coverage before participating in any climbing mission.

The regulation mandates that all personnel, including liaison officers, team leaders, mountain guides, high-altitude workers, and base camp workers, must obtain personal accident insurance from a government-approved insurance provider before commencing their expedition. This insurance policy will remain valid throughout the duration of the climb until their safe return.

The revision aims to enhance the safety and financial security of mountaineering professionals, who play a critical role in Nepal’s high-altitude expeditions. With Nepal being a hub for global mountaineering tourism, the increased insurance coverage is expected to provide better risk protection for those working in extreme conditions.
