Nepal Welcomes 1,251 Climbers for Autumn Mountaineering Season

Nepal has officially welcomed 1,251 climbers from 72 countries for its autumn mountaineering season, which is proving to be another significant chapter in the country’s growing prominence as a global climbing destination. According to the Department of Tourism, the climbers have set their sights on 46 peaks, ranging from the eastern Makalu to the western Api.

The United States leads the pack with 131 climbers, followed by the United Kingdom (105), France (83), China (79), Germany (77), Russia (75), Japan (64), the Czech Republic (62), Spain (51), and Australia (50). In total, 292 women and 959 men are part of the expedition, with 43 Nepali climbers also participating in this season’s climbs.

As of Friday, the Department of Tourism reports that NPR 85.8 million (approximately USD 650,000) in royalties has been collected from climbing permits. Notably, no permits have been issued for Mount Everest this season. However, the focus remains on other major peaks, with 159 climbing teams tackling the challenging 46 summits, including the 8,000-meter giants of Manaslu, Dhaulagiri, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.

Among the peaks, Mount Ama Dablam stands out as the most popular, drawing 481 climbers, followed by Manaslu with 308 climbers. Other significant peaks include Himlung (144), Baruntse (51), Thapa Peak/Dhampus (32), Putha Hiunchuli (28), and Saribung (21).

Nepal’s mountaineering season is divided into three major periods: Spring (March–May), the busiest season for climbing; Autumn (September–November), the second most popular season; and Winter (December–February), the least active period. This autumn season highlights Nepal’s enduring appeal as a mountaineering hotspot, with robust international participation underscoring the country’s vital role in promoting adventure tourism.

The surge in climbers during the autumn season is a testament to the growing global interest in Nepal’s Himalayan peaks and the country’s ability to sustain its reputation as one of the top destinations for mountaineering enthusiasts.
