Nepal attracted an impressive 1,147,567 foreign tourists in 2024, according to the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB). This figure represents a 14% increase compared to 2023, when 1,014,871 tourists visited the country. The growth signifies a positive rebound for Nepal’s tourism sector, which was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Director of the NTB, Marinraj Lamichhane, highlighted that while the 2024 arrivals were slightly below the pre-pandemic record of 1,197,191 tourists in 2019, the sector has regained momentum. This resurgence reflects Nepal’s successful recovery, surpassing the Asia-Pacific region’s average rebound rate. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) reported that Nepal’s tourism recovery reached 96%, compared to the global recovery rate of 93%.
The NTB attributes this growth to intensified marketing efforts and landmark events, such as the Nepal Premier League (NPL), the Buddhist Conference, over 800 chartered flights during major festivals, the International Balloon Festival, and the Chinese Dragon Festival. These activities, coupled with regional tourism promotion, played a pivotal role in boosting tourist numbers.
The highest number of visitors was recorded in March, with 128,167 arrivals, followed by October with 124,393. Conversely, July witnessed the lowest influx, with 64,599 tourists. Other notable months include April (113,076), November (114,501), and September (96,305). These trends highlight a steady flow of tourists during spring and autumn, traditionally the peak seasons for trekking and cultural tours in Nepal.
The NTB remains optimistic about sustaining this growth and exceeding pre-pandemic levels through continued promotion and innovative initiatives. The figures underscore Nepal’s appeal as a preferred destination for adventure, culture, and natural beauty on the global stage.
