NMA Prepares to Launch Mountaineering Training Institute to Enhance Global Standards

The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) is in the final stages of establishing the Nepal Mountaineering Training Institute (NMTI) with the aim of enhancing mountaineering training standards and producing globally competent professionals in the field.

A comprehensive 1,996-hour curriculum for Professional Mountain Guide and Professional Mountain Leader training has been developed and approved by the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT). The affiliation process with CTEVT is currently underway. The training institute will be housed on the ground floor of the NMA building in Nagpokhari, Naxal, with construction of necessary infrastructure already planned.

At a recent certificate distribution ceremony for the High Mountain Rescue Training (HMRT), NMA President Mr. Nima Nuru Sherpa emphasized the importance of the initiative. “This will be a milestone for mountaineering training in Nepal. We urge all stakeholders to support this institute, which is crucial for the safety and growth of mountain tourism,” he said.

Senior Vice President Mr. Thakur Raj Pandey and General Secretary Mr. Mohan Lamsal echoed these sentiments, highlighting the collective responsibility of the mountaineering community to uplift the sector. “We understand some processes may need revisions, but with joint effort, we can ensure the successful operation of the institute,” said Secretary Lamsal.

Support also came from the President of the Nepal Mountaineering Instructors Association (NMIA), Mr. Tshering Pandey Bhote, and the President of the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA), Mr. Tulsing Gurung, who both underscored the importance of ongoing NMA-led training initiatives for the development of Nepal’s mountain tourism industry.

As part of its ongoing training programs, NMA also completed the 16th edition of the High Mountain Rescue Training (HMRT), held from February 10 to March 2, 2025, in Kathmandu and Langtang. The program trained 21 participants in high-altitude rescue techniques, strengthening Nepal’s capacity for mountain safety and emergency response.

Certificates were distributed by NMA President Sherpa and other officials, including Central Executive Board Member Mr. Pitamber Gurung and Chief Administrative Officer Mr. Jinesh Sindurakar. The new training institute and continued efforts like HMRT reflect NMA’s commitment to professionalizing Nepal’s mountaineering sector and maintaining its reputation as a global hub for mountain tourism.
