Nepal Tourism Board and SOTTO Nepal Launch Tax and Legal Compliance Training for Travel Agencies

The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), in collaboration with Society of Travel and Tour Operators Nepal (SOTTO Nepal), has launched a two-day training program in Kathmandu focused on tax management and legal compliance for travel and tour agencies, aimed at strengthening professionalism and improving regulatory awareness across Nepal’s tourism sector.

The training program officially began on Thursday in Kathmandu, bringing together 50 tourism entrepreneurs and representatives from various travel and tour companies operating across the country. The initiative is designed to help tourism businesses better understand taxation procedures, legal obligations, and financial compliance requirements essential for sustainable business operations.

Training Focuses on Tax Laws and Business Compliance in Tourism Sector

According to organizers, the training covers a wide range of topics related to different taxation systems, tourism-related tax structures, Value Added Tax (VAT), legal provisions governing business operations, tax payment procedures, and key compliance requirements that tourism businesses must follow under Nepal’s financial regulations.

The program particularly emphasizes practical knowledge to help travel agencies avoid legal complications and financial penalties that often arise due to inadequate understanding of tax regulations. Industry officials say many small and medium-sized tourism businesses frequently face unnecessary administrative difficulties and significant fines because of limited knowledge regarding tax laws and regulatory procedures. The training has therefore been designed to provide practical, business-oriented guidance rather than purely theoretical instruction.

SOTTO Nepal Says Training Will Reduce Financial Risks for Tourism Entrepreneurs

Speaking about the initiative, Man Bahadur Shahi, President of Society of Travel and Tour Operators Nepal (SOTTO Nepal), said the primary objective of the training is to equip tourism entrepreneurs with essential knowledge that can help them avoid unnecessary complications related to taxation and legal compliance. President of Society of Travel and Tour Operators Nepal (SOTTO Nepal) Shahi noted that while tax regulations may change every year, the fundamental principles of taxation remain largely consistent, making long-term knowledge in this area highly valuable for business sustainability and operational efficiency.

President of the Society of Travel and Tour Operators Nepal (SOTTO Nepal) emphasized that many entrepreneurs often face heavy fines and legal complications simply because they lack a basic understanding of tax laws, and the training aims to address that gap by improving awareness and promoting stronger financial discipline. “Business owners should not suffer unnecessary penalties because of insufficient knowledge about taxation systems. This training is designed to provide practical understanding that supports long-term business sustainability while improving transparency and financial discipline,” President of the Society of Travel and Tour Operators Nepal (SOTTO Nepal) Shahi stated.

Nepal Tourism Board Encourages Greater Awareness to Avoid Legal Penalties

The Nepal Tourism Board said tourism entrepreneurs need to become more proactive regarding tax payment procedures and legal compliance, as negligence or lack of awareness can often lead to strict penalties and administrative burdens that negatively affect business operations.

Officials from the board stated that the partnership with the Society of Travel and Tour Operators Nepal (SOTTO Nepal) was formed specifically to help tourism businesses become more aware of their financial and legal responsibilities while building stronger institutional professionalism within Nepal’s tourism industry. The board believes improving compliance standards among tourism businesses will contribute to creating a healthier and more transparent tourism business ecosystem that supports long-term sectoral growth.

Different Expert Sessions Cover Practical Business Challenges

The training program features multiple technical sessions led by experts covering different aspects of tax law, legal compliance procedures, VAT regulations, accounting practices, and operational responsibilities specific to tourism businesses. Participants will receive both theoretical knowledge and practical guidance intended to address real-world challenges commonly faced by travel and tour operators in their day-to-day business operations. Organizers confirmed that the two-day program will officially conclude on Friday following the completion of all scheduled training sessions.

AI Training Program Planned for Tourism Businesses Next Month

In a move reflecting the growing importance of digital transformation in tourism, the Nepal Tourism Board also announced that it will continue working with Society of Travel and Tour Operators Nepal (SOTTO Nepal) next month to organize a separate training program focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications for tourism businesses.

The upcoming AI-focused training is expected to help travel agencies understand how emerging technologies can improve customer service, business operations, marketing strategies, and digital competitiveness within Nepal’s evolving tourism market. Industry observers say such capacity-building initiatives are becoming increasingly important as Nepal’s tourism sector adapts to changing global business practices, digital transformation, and growing demand for professional service standards.
