Nijgadh Airport & Terai-Madhes: PM Oli Showcases Bold Advancements

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has reiterated the government’s positive stance on moving forward with the construction of Nijgadh International Airport despite its high budget requirements.

During a parliamentary session on Sunday, in response to a question from MP Pratiksha Tiwari regarding development projects of Nijgadh airport in the Terai-Madhes region, PM Oli emphasized that the government prioritizes these projects, considering their contribution to the overall economic and social development of the country. He stated that these initiatives have been included in the 16th periodic plan as national pride projects, with significant budget allocations each year to ensure their implementation.

PM Oli also highlighted the successful completion of the 52 km Jaynagar-Janakpur-Kurtha-Bijaypur railway, which now operates passenger services daily. The Jaynagar-Janakpur route runs three times a day, while the Janakpur-Bijaypur route operates once a day. Additionally, he confirmed that the construction of the 17 km Bijaypur-Bardibas railway segment will soon commence with support from the Indian government.

Regarding the Kathmandu-Terai/Madhes Fast Track, PM Oli stated that the Nepal Army has been entrusted with its rapid completion. He noted that the project has achieved 37.6% physical progress so far.

He further informed that the Sunkoshi-Marin Diversion Multipurpose Project has completed its tunnel construction, while work on the headworks, powerhouse, and other structures is progressing, with the project currently 35.18% completed.

Addressing environmental concerns, PM Oli emphasized that the Chure region remains highly sensitive due to its geological structure, soil composition, biodiversity decline, and intense rainfall. He outlined ongoing efforts under the President Chure Conservation Program, which has so far implemented 657 underground water recharge systems, 159 wetland management projects, 176 rainwater runoff harvesting dams, and 548 water source conservation initiatives. The parliamentary session continued with further discussions and a Q&A session with the Prime Minister.
