A new step toward sustainable tourism has been initiated as the Pokhara Tourism Council (PTC) and the Shaanxi Association for Carbon Neutrality Technology Development signed an agreement to collaborate on climate action, carbon reduction, and green tourism development.
The agreement was formalized through an institutional relations establishment and letter exchange ceremony, marking the beginning of long-term cooperation between Nepal and China in the field of sustainable tourism and environmental management.

Joint Efforts on Carbon Neutrality and Green Innovation
Under the agreement, the Chinese organization will work closely with PTC to support carbon neutrality policy research, green finance, carbon asset management, and the promotion of low-carbon technologies in Pokhara.
The collaboration also includes knowledge exchange programs and international cooperation initiatives aimed at strengthening Pokhara’s capacity to address climate challenges while advancing its tourism sector. The agreement was signed by PTC President Taranath Pahari and Chinese representative Wu Chao.
Addressing Growing Climate Challenges in Pokhara
Speaking at the event, PTC President Taranath Pahari highlighted the urgency of addressing climate change, noting that its impacts are increasingly visible in Pokhara and surrounding areas. He stated that the collaboration aims to integrate China’s advanced experience and technologies in carbon neutrality with local conditions in Pokhara. The goal is to transform the city’s tourism sector into a green and low-carbon model, including environmentally friendly hotels and sustainable transport systems. Pahari also emphasized the importance of taking timely action, noting that delays in addressing carbon emissions have already contributed to environmental challenges.

Promoting Low-Carbon Agriculture and Local Economy
Beyond tourism, the agreement also focuses on developing low-carbon agricultural models. This includes promoting green certification for local agricultural products and enhancing their market value through sustainable practices. According to Pahari, the initiative will not only support environmental conservation but also contribute to local economic growth by creating value-added products and new opportunities for farmers.
Introducing Green Technology and Creating Economic Opportunities
The partnership aims to introduce a range of green technologies in Pokhara, including clean energy solutions, efficient waste management systems, and energy-efficient infrastructure. Officials believe that these initiatives will help mitigate environmental challenges while opening new avenues for green economic development. By adopting low-carbon technologies and management practices, Pokhara is expected to enhance its competitiveness as an international tourism destination.
Strengthening Regional and Cross-Border Cooperation
The agreement also highlights support for broader regional initiatives such as the Trans-Himalayan Multi-Dimensional Connectivity Network. Both parties have expressed commitment to strengthening mutual trust and cooperation between the people of Nepal and China through practical collaboration.

Additionally, the partnership includes plans to establish a Chinese spice shop in Pokhara as part of regular cooperation activities, reflecting efforts to expand cultural and economic exchange alongside environmental initiatives.
Experts Stress Urgency of Sustainable Tourism
PTC advisor Basu Tripathi noted that climate change is no longer a localized issue but a global challenge. He emphasized that the collaboration will also contribute to the protection of Pokhara’s natural and cultural heritage.
Similarly, PTC General Secretary Jeevan Raj Sapkota expressed concern that failure to adopt sustainable tourism practices could create serious challenges in the future. He stressed the need to identify practical ways to reduce carbon emissions in Pokhara. Tourism Board Gandaki Chief Mani R. Lamichhane also welcomed the agreement, stating that collective efforts are essential to tackle climate change, which is a global issue affecting all nations.

Shared Global Responsibility for Environmental Protection
Representing the Chinese organization, Wu Chao emphasized that climate change cannot be addressed by individual countries alone. He highlighted the importance of global cooperation, stating that protecting nature is a shared responsibility. He added that efforts must go beyond immediate benefits and focus on preserving the environment for future generations, underlining the long-term vision behind the partnership.
The agreement between Pokhara Tourism Council and the Shaanxi Association for Carbon Neutrality Technology Development marks a significant step toward building a sustainable and climate-resilient tourism model in Pokhara. With a focus on green technology, low-carbon development, and international collaboration, the partnership is expected to play a key role in shaping the future of tourism in Nepal while contributing to global climate action efforts.
