The scenic Manaslu region in northern Gorkha welcomed over 10,000 foreign tourists in 2024, marking a significant milestone in its tourism history. According to Bhuwan Raj Ojha, Conservation Officer and Information Officer at the Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP), a total of 10,605 foreign visitors explored the area last year. This represents an increase of 1,428 tourists compared to 2023, when 9,177 foreigners visited the region.
“This is the highest number of foreign tourists visiting the Manaslu region to date,” Ojha noted, highlighting the growing popularity of the area. Among the international visitors, a majority hailed from non-SAARC countries, indicating the region’s global appeal. France topped the list with 1,335 tourists, followed by Germany with 1,181 visitors and the United States with 796 tourists. Meanwhile, among SAARC nations, India contributed the highest number of tourists, with 159 individuals trekking through the Manaslu trails.
Other countries with notable tourist numbers included the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Australia, Spain, and China. The visitors were drawn to the region’s unmatched natural beauty and cultural richness, with major attractions including the majestic Mount Manaslu, the world’s eighth-highest peak; the serene Birendra Lake; and the picturesque Kal Tal in Nubri Valley. Many tourists also crossed the challenging Larke Pass to reach Manang.
In Chum Valley, visitors marveled at the globally renowned Shringi Himal and the historic Rajen Monastery, among other ancient sites. The region offers a unique blend of natural and cultural experiences, allowing tourists to observe rare wildlife such as snow leopards, Himalayan thar, ghorals, and colorful pheasants like danphe and monal. Additionally, they enjoyed the warm proximity to yak herds and experienced the authentic lifestyle of the local communities.
The Manaslu region continues to captivate adventurers and nature enthusiasts from around the world, further solidifying its reputation as one of Nepal’s premier trekking destinations.
