Kaprudanda: An Emerging Tourist Destination in Kaski

Kaprudanda, located in Madi Rural Municipality-2 of Kaski, has seen significant development as a tourist destination following the expansion of road networks five years ago. Joint efforts by the Nepal Tourism Board, the Industry and Tourism Ministry of Gandaki Province, and Madi Rural Municipality have spurred this transformation.

A decade ago, Kaprudanda served primarily as a grazing area for livestock. Locals recall it as a site where herders would bring their animals. Today, it has become a major attraction for both domestic and international tourists. The establishment of tourist-friendly infrastructure, including well-paved roads and hotels, has contributed to the growing influx of visitors. According to Himal Gurung, proprietor of the Midnight Campers Hotel in Kaprudanda, the number of tourists has surged significantly.

Breathtaking Views and Natural Beauty

Kaprudanda offers spectacular views of the sunrise and sunset, along with panoramic vistas of iconic peaks like Manaslu, Annapurna II, III, IV, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, Mardi, Buddha, and Harka Gurung. Nestled amidst dense rhododendron forests, the open landscapes provide a tranquil escape for nature lovers.

“Visitors can witness stunning Himalayan views while enjoying the serene environment,” shared Gurung. “Despite disruptions during the pandemic, tourist interest has only grown in recent years.” During the snowy season, the region attracts a surge of domestic tourists, particularly from Pokhara and nearby cities like Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Butwal.

Rich Cultural and Historical Significance

The site is steeped in history. Senior locals recount stories of Kaprudanda’s connection to the Ghale kings, who reportedly sent tax collectors to the area during their reign in Kholasothar. Additionally, its traditional ties to the Gurung community have inspired its integration into the Gurung Heritage Trek.

Tourists trekking to Kaprudanda can reach the site in 4–6 hours from the picturesque Gurung village of Tangting. Others opt for motor vehicles to explore the region more conveniently. Once there, visitors can engage in activities like birdwatching and hiking while experiencing local Gurung culture and hospitality.

Improved Facilities and Visitor Packages

In response to rising demand, Kaprudanda now hosts four well-equipped hotels. These establishments offer packages for NPR 1,500, which include evening tea and snacks, dinner, a tent for overnight stays, and breakfast. Local delicacies further enhance the visitor experience.

During a recent visit, a group of young bikers from Butwal, who arrived to celebrate Christmas, praised the destination. “Kaprudanda is an excellent destination to experience Himalayan views, Gurung heritage, and pristine natural beauty,” said Suman Thapa, a visitor. He emphasized the need for more promotion to attract a broader audience and boost tourism-related economic opportunities.

Trekking and Heritage Promotion

Kaprudanda is now part of the Gurung Heritage Trek route, which spans from Sikles to Kapuche, Kori, Thulolek, and Kholasothar, ultimately connecting Kaprudanda to Yangjakot. Promotional treks have highlighted its potential as a unique cultural and natural destination.

The Gurung Tourism Entrepreneurs Association of Gandaki Province has prioritized the development of this route while urging coordination among local, provincial, and federal governments to sustain these efforts. “Despite challenges posed by unplanned road construction affecting traditional trekking routes, Kaprudanda stands out for its rich heritage and scenic beauty,” said association chairperson Kishmakumari Gurung.

With increasing attention from stakeholders, Kaprudanda is poised to become a cornerstone of Nepal’s eco-tourism and cultural tourism offerings.
