Second Edition of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Open Climbing Competition Announced

The second edition of the Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Open Climbing Competition is set to take place, with registration forms open from January 15 to January 25, as announced by the organizers.

The competition is being jointly organized by the US Nepal Climbers Association (USNCA) and the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA). According to Serap Jangbu Sherpa, the founding president and representative of USNCA, the event will be held on January 29 and 30 (Magh 16 and 17) and will be conducted in two stages.

The qualifier round will take place at the Gateway Adventure Hub, while the semi-finals and finals will be hosted at the Crimpanzee Adventure Hub in Boudha. Sherpa, who is also the coordinator of the event, stated that the competition aims to promote mountaineering sports in Nepal and honor the legacy of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa. He emphasized that the event is expected to inspire individuals with an interest in climbing and contribute to the growth of adventure tourism in Nepal.

Speaking about the initiative, Sherpa noted, “We have previously organized a Top Rope Edition in the United States and successfully held the first edition in Nepal. This second edition, too, is being conducted in Nepal to further encourage adventurous tourism.” He added that last year’s competition had left a positive impression among youth climbers.

The two-day competition will feature a qualifier round on the first day, followed by the semi-finals and finals on the second day. The entry fee for participants is NPR 500, and individuals aged 12 and above are eligible to compete. The event will have separate categories for men and women, with cash prizes for the top three positions. Winners in both categories will receive NPR 45,000, NPR 30,000, and NPR 15,000, respectively.

According to Pimba Tenzing Lama, General Secretary of NNMGA and co-coordinator of the event, the competition is not only a platform for climbing but also a tribute to the indomitable spirit of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa. “This event celebrates the climbing culture, camaraderie, and legacy of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa,” he stated.

The organizers anticipate participation from 40 to 45 male climbers and 20 to 25 female climbers. NNMGA will handle the technical responsibilities for the event. Additionally, USNCA and NNMGA have agreed to alternate as coordinators for the event annually under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

This year’s event promises to be an exciting showcase of climbing talent and a celebration of Nepal’s rich mountaineering heritage
