A delegation from the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN), led by Officiating President and Senior Vice President Mr. Karma Sherpa and accompanied by Chief Executive Officer Mr. Ram Chandra Sedai, met with senior officials of the Department of Immigration (DoI) to discuss the implementation of reformed immigration policies and their impact on the tourism sector.
Focus on Electronic Travel Authorization and Visitor Management
During the meeting, TAAN and DoI officials reviewed key components of Nepal’s tourism-related immigration frameworks, including the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system and the Foreign Nationals Management Information System (FNMIS). Both parties discussed the current processes, challenges, and potential improvements to facilitate smoother entry and stay procedures for international visitors.

TAAN expressed appreciation for the Department of Immigration’s ongoing efforts to digitize the visitor arrival process, which has significantly streamlined the entry experience for foreign tourists. The delegation highlighted the positive impact of digitization on operational efficiency and the overall visitor experience in Nepal.
Simplifying ETA and Visa Extension Procedures
In addition to acknowledging ongoing improvements, TAAN requested the DoI to simplify the ETA application and visa extension procedures. Officials emphasized that making these processes more user-friendly would encourage longer stays, repeat visits, and a positive perception of Nepal as a tourism-friendly destination.
Mr. Karma Sherpa stressed that simplifying immigration procedures is crucial for enhancing Nepal’s competitiveness in the global tourism market, especially as the country seeks to attract more international trekkers, mountaineers, and general tourists.
Strengthening Collaboration Between Tourism and Immigration
The meeting reflected a growing collaboration between tourism stakeholders and immigration authorities, aiming to create an efficient and welcoming environment for visitors. Both TAAN and DoI agreed on the importance of ongoing dialogue to identify practical solutions and address challenges in policy implementation.
Mr. Ram Chandra Sedai noted that proactive engagement between the government and tourism industry representatives is essential for ensuring that Nepal’s tourism infrastructure aligns with international standards while maintaining security and regulatory compliance.

A Step Forward for Nepal’s Tourism Sector
TAAN’s engagement with the Department of Immigration demonstrates a concerted effort to balance regulatory requirements with the needs of the tourism industry. By focusing on digitalization, simplification of procedures, and collaborative policymaking, Nepal is taking steps to enhance visitor convenience and strengthen its reputation as a top destination for global travelers.
Officials from both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in immigration processes, ensuring that Nepal remains accessible, safe, and appealing for international tourists.
