Tourism as the Pillar of Gandaki Province’s Prosperity: Minister Gurung

Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, emphasized that tourism is the cornerstone of Gandaki Province‘s prosperity. Speaking at a dialogue program titled “Gandaki’s Tourism: Takeoff for the Economy,” organized by Sunaulo Nepal in Pokhara on Friday, the minister highlighted the province’s potential to reap significant benefits from its strategic geographical location, bordered by China and India.

Infrastructure Development for Tourism

Minister Gurung announced plans to establish integrated government offices at the Korala border point with China, including customs and immigration facilities. “Opening customs and immigration offices at Korala will pave the way for Chinese visitors to enter Nepal, significantly boosting tourism in Pokhara and the entire Gandaki Province,” he said.

He also noted ongoing upgrades to key roadways, including the Butwal–Pokhara and Sauraha–Pokhara highways, which will enhance accessibility for tourists traveling by road. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of initiating regular international flights from Pokhara International Airport to position the province as a global tourism hub.

Pokhara International Airport: A Catalyst for Growth

Minister Gurung highlighted ongoing efforts to promote international flights from Pokhara International Airport, with some national carriers preparing to launch international services. “We must not view the airport solely as a profit-making venture. The economic activities it will generate will lead the nation towards prosperity,” he added. He also noted a marked increase in domestic flights, which is boosting connectivity and economic vibrancy in the region.

Building World-Class Tourism Infrastructure

The minister advocated for the construction of international-standard conference halls and exhibition centers in Pokhara to further enhance its appeal as a global tourism destination. He also underscored the need for large-scale infrastructure projects to achieve national prosperity, citing the proposed Nijgadh International Airport and the three operational international airports as examples of initiatives that strengthen Nepal’s global connections.

Promoting Pokhara as a Sports Hub

Pokhara, renowned as a convergence of nature, culture, and adventure, also has the potential to become a center for sports tourism, according to Minister Gurung. He urged stakeholders to explore opportunities for developing sports-related infrastructure in the region.

Legal Reforms to Drive Economic Activity

Acknowledging the nation’s current economic challenges, Minister Gurung revealed that the government is fast-tracking amendments to outdated laws hindering economic activities. “Amendments to 11 obstructive laws are underway, spearheaded by the respective ministries,” he said, highlighting the government’s focus on fostering an environment conducive to growth and investment.

Vision for a Prosperous Gandaki

The dialogue concluded with a collective commitment to leveraging Gandaki Province’s unique geographical and cultural assets to boost tourism and drive economic development. Minister Gurung reiterated the importance of sustainable infrastructure, global connectivity, and legal reforms in realizing Gandaki’s potential as a tourism-driven economic powerhouse.
