In a concerted effort to enhance sustainability and promote eco-tourism, a Trash-Free Campaign and Trekking Route Monitoring Program was successfully conducted in the Annapurna region from November 27 to 30, 2024. The initiative was a collaborative undertaking involving key stakeholders committed to preserving the natural beauty and environmental integrity of the area. The Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) played a pivotal role in organizing the campaign, bringing its decades-long expertise in conservation and community engagement to the forefront.

ACAP has been a driving force in maintaining the ecological balance of the Annapurna region while fostering local community involvement. Partnering with ACAP were Machhapuchhre Rural Municipality and Annapurna Rural Municipality, Kaski, which actively supported the campaign. Both municipalities have been advocating for sustainable tourism practices and ensuring the integration of conservation priorities into local development plans.

The campaign also saw the active participation of the Conservation Area Management Committees (CAMCs) of Lwangghalel and Lumle, Kaski. These local bodies are instrumental in implementing conservation policies at the grassroots level. Their efforts were complemented by the Mardi Trek Management Committee, which focuses on managing and promoting the popular Mardi Trek, ensuring its sustainable growth as a trekking destination.

During the four-day program, participants undertook extensive clean-up drives along trekking routes, collecting and managing waste left by visitors. Additionally, the team monitored the condition of trekking trails to identify areas requiring maintenance. The campaign emphasized the importance of sustainable tourism and raised awareness among locals and trekkers about waste management and environmental conservation.

This initiative not only strengthened the collaborative efforts between local governing bodies and conservation organizations but also reinforced the importance of preserving the Annapurna region’s pristine environment. The success of the campaign underscores the region’s commitment to fostering eco-friendly tourism practices and ensuring the longevity of its natural and cultural treasures.
