Ajirkot Rural Municipality Develops Olang as a Tourism-Friendly Model Village

Ajirkot Rural Municipality has successfully developed the remote village of Olang as a tourism-friendly model village. This development is a joint effort between the Gandaki Provincial Government and the local municipality, with significant investment in tourist infrastructure.

According to the municipality’s chairperson, Dipak Devkota, the development of Olang, located in Ward No. 2, began under the “Tourism-Friendly Model Village Promotion Program.” The initiative aims to utilize barren land and create opportunities for local youth to become self-employed. Devkota emphasized that the program is focused on generating employment and providing opportunities within the village, thereby supporting youth empowerment.

“The locals are seeking employment and opportunities, and the program is being effectively implemented to generate self-sufficiency by creating jobs within the village. We are investing in developing Olang as a beautiful tourist spot in Ajirkot,” Devkota added.

As part of the development, a “foot trail” has been constructed, along with tourist-friendly infrastructure to enhance the visitor experience. The village, home to Tamang and Gurung communities, is being developed not only for tourism but also to preserve and showcase the local community’s cultural traditions.

“Olang is being developed with the aim of increasing local income through tourism. We are also working on developing the historical Bhirmouri Mah festival, which has been celebrated for generations, into an adventure tourism attraction,” Devkota explained.

Tourists visiting Olang will now be able to enjoy organic food, with the municipality having studied the local climate and implemented a well-organized trout farming program. Additionally, Olang is being developed as a place to study the culture and traditions of the Tamang community.

The village has also seen the construction of tourism-friendly pathways, rest areas, and traditional cultural structures, enhancing its overall appeal. Furthermore, the municipality is promoting commercial vegetable farming by providing farmers with training and constructing high-tech tunnels for farming.

To welcome tourists, the municipality has trained local women in hospitality management, ensuring a warm and professional reception. A total of 21 development plans have been successfully implemented in Olang under this program.

This initiative is a significant step in turning Olang into a key tourism destination, contributing to both the local economy and cultural preservation.
