Climbers Vanish in Annapurna Avalanche: Desperate Search and Rescue Mission Launched

Two climbers have gone missing following an avalanche that struck between Camp II and Camp III of Mount Annapurna on Sunday morning. The missing individuals have been identified as Rima Sherpa and Nima Tashi Sherpa, both from Solukhumbu district, a renowned region for high-altitude climbers.

According to Ningma Sherpa, proprietor of Seven Summit Treks, the duo was part of a mountaineering expedition progressing towards the summit when the avalanche occurred. Their last contact was recorded early in the morning before the avalanche hit the area.

Upon receiving the report, fellow Sherpas stationed at the base camp immediately launched a ground-level search operation in an attempt to locate the missing climbers. In coordination with the rescue teams, a helicopter from Kathmandu has been dispatched to assist with the aerial search and possible evacuation, if required. However, poor visibility and challenging weather conditions are reportedly hampering rescue efforts.

As per the latest data from Nepal’s Department of Tourism, a total of 42 climbers – 30 males and 12 females – from four different expedition groups have been granted permits to scale Mount Annapurna during this spring climbing season. Annapurna, the world’s tenth-highest mountain at 8,091 meters, is known for its treacherous routes and high avalanche risk, making rescue missions particularly difficult.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and additional support is being coordinated for the ongoing rescue efforts. Concerned families and the mountaineering community are anxiously awaiting further updates.

Mount Annapurna has long been regarded as one of the most dangerous 8,000-meter peaks, with a fatality rate among the highest in the Himalayas. This latest incident underscores the continuing risks faced by those who attempt to conquer its slopes. Further developments will be reported as the rescue operation continues.
