Upper Mustang Witnesses Record Surge in Foreign Tourists in 2024

The enchanting region of Upper Mustang, Nepal, welcomed more than 4,000 foreign tourists in 2024, marking a 14.20% increase compared to the previous year. According to data from the Lomanthang office of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), a total of 4,061 international visitors explored the area in 2024, up from 3,484 in 2023.

Office Chief Umesh Poudel attributed the surge in tourist numbers to several factors, including improved road and transport facilities, global recognition of the Annapurna Circuit Trek as one of the world’s top 10 tourism destinations, heightened publicity efforts, and the operation of luxurious hotels catering to travelers’ needs.

The steady rise in tourist numbers highlights Upper Mustang‘s growing appeal. In 2022, the region attracted 3,112 foreign visitors, while the pandemic years saw a drastic decline, with only 332 tourists in 2021 and 62 in 2020. The last pre-pandemic year, 2019, recorded 3,918 visitors, showcasing a significant rebound in recent years.

Known for its unique landscape, ancient monasteries, and rich cultural heritage, Upper Mustang continues to establish itself as a premier destination for both adventure and cultural tourism. The latest figures reflect the region’s strong recovery and its potential to attract even more visitors in the coming years. The growing influx of tourists emphasizes the need for sustainable tourism practices to preserve Upper Mustang’s pristine environment and cultural integrity while catering to the rising demand.
