A vintage 1957 Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft has caught attention after being spotted at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake, Sri Lanka. The Hercules operated by Coulson Aviation, was notable for having a striking red and white paint scheme. This image taken by local aviation photographer Malin Jayasuri shows the aircraft taxiing around Bandaranaike International Airport after a long distance stop over. This allowed aviation enthusiasts to catch a glimpse of this classic Hercules variant.
Historic Hercules Catches Attention
Developed by American aviation company Lockheed, the four engine turboprop Hercules was introduced in the 1950’s. It became well known for its tough build, loading ramp at the rear and ability to operate from short and difficult runways. As such, this Hercules aircraft could be used to transport people and materials under harsh conditions. Over the decades it has been used by military and civil operators worldwide.

Although new variants of the Hercules have brought improvements from newer technology, the older variants of the aircraft are still very important to aviation history. They are still used within specialist operations to show how tough the initial aircraft was. This Hercules aircraft, which was built back in 1957, caught attention at Bandaranaike International Airport. This shows how long the Hercules family has been in operation.
Coulson Aircraft Seen In Short Stop
The aircraft is operated by Coulson Aviation who are well known for their use of specialist aircraft. This aircraft had a red nose and vertical tail which made it easy to recognise. The company specialise in using specialist aircraft for difficult mission types. The Hercules is ideal due to its ability to carry large amounts of cargo.

The aircraft was on a long distance flight and had made a stop at Bandaranaike International Airport. Ground staff were working on the aircraft to complete normal servicing and refueling operations ahead of continuing with the flight. However, there has been no confirmation of where this aircraft was heading, what flight it was on or why it was stopping. Knowing what the aircraft is registered as would help to know what it was doing.
Hercules Has Been Used For Specialist Operations
Since its introduction, the C-130 has been used for many different operations. This includes military transport, disaster relief, humanitarian operations and cargo. The large amount of cargo it can carry makes it useful for difficult situations where normal transport aircraft may struggle. There are multiple variants of the Hercules which have been modified to complete specialist operations within the civil sector. These include fighting forest fires.

Coulson Aviation are well known for fighting forest fires. The Hercules has a proven design which makes it ideal for missions requiring large amounts of payload. This shows how aircraft built for military transport can be used for different purposes within the civil sector. The C-130 is a very important aircraft type within the military and specialist aviation sectors.
Unusual Aircraft Attracts Attention
Any unusual aircraft sightings at large international airports will attract attention from aviation photographers and enthusiasts. Although Bandaranaike International Airport is a common place for international passenger and cargo flights, this older variant Hercules was an unusual sight. The aircraft had a unique appearance and was very interesting for local aviation enthusiasts. It also gives a chance to capture images of aircraft which aren’t commonly seen within certain areas.
This landing shows just how much the Hercules C-130 is still used within specialist aviation roles nearly 7 decades after its introduction. This shows how tough and versatile the initial design of the aircraft was. This gave aviation enthusiasts in Sri Lanka a chance to get up close to a unique transport aircraft. However, the aircraft is said to have been manufactured back in 1957 which can be confirmed by looking at the aircraft registration.
