Nepal Braces as Monsoon Trough Brings Cloudy Weather and Intense Rainfall Risks

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has reported that the low-pressure trough of the monsoon is currently positioned around its average line. This alignment has triggered widespread cloudy conditions across the country, signaling an active weather system. The department noted that such positioning of the trough often leads to scattered to widespread rainfall events, with varying intensity depending on the terrain and atmospheric conditions.

Cloudy Skies Nationwide

According to the department’s forecast, the weather today will remain generally cloudy throughout Nepal. The monsoon system continues to dominate the weather pattern, keeping the skies overcast. While light rainfall has already been observed in some parts of the country since morning, the afternoon and evening hours are expected to bring more widespread precipitation, particularly in the hilly and Terai belts.

Afternoon Showers Expected in Hilly Provinces

Meteorologists have predicted that this afternoon, there will be a significant possibility of moderate rainfall in the hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces. Some areas of Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces are also likely to receive moderate showers. A few scattered locations in other provinces may also experience rainfall, though with lesser intensity compared to the hills. The department emphasized that the hilly regions are particularly vulnerable due to the monsoon dynamics, which often bring moisture-laden winds against the elevated terrain, causing heavy downpours.

Chances of Heavy Rainfall in Isolated Areas

In addition to moderate showers, the department has also warned of heavy rainfall in one or two places in the hilly regions of Koshi and Gandaki provinces. Similarly, the hilly and Terai belts of Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces are expected to witness intense downpours at isolated points. Such rainfall, while beneficial for agriculture, may also pose risks of localized flooding, waterlogging in urban centers, and landslides in rural hill areas. The department has urged the public and authorities to remain cautious.

Cloudy Conditions to Persist Tonight

The weather will continue to remain cloudy across the country tonight, according to the forecast. The monsoon trough’s influence is expected to sustain over Nepal, maintaining the overcast conditions. Nighttime cloud cover often contributes to increased humidity levels and can reduce temperature variations between day and night, making the environment damp and uncomfortable in several regions.

Nighttime Rainfall Predictions

Moderate rainfall is likely to occur in some areas of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces during the night. In addition, a few locations across the remaining hilly and Terai regions are also predicted to experience rain showers. The department mentioned that rainfall activity during nighttime hours is common when the monsoon trough lies around its average position, often intensifying after sunset due to cooling atmospheric conditions.

Heavy Rainfall Risks Continue in the Hills

The DHM has also forecast the likelihood of heavy rainfall in one or two areas of the hilly regions of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces tonight. These downpours may occur suddenly and can result in localized hazards. The department has highlighted the risk of landslides, particularly in districts with steep terrain, and has advised travelers, farmers, and residents in vulnerable zones to exercise caution.

Advisory for Public Safety

Authorities have urged people to remain alert, especially those living in flood-prone and landslide-prone regions. The monsoon season has already caused several weather-related challenges this year, and heavy rainfall episodes could further aggravate the situation. Motorists are advised to drive carefully due to slippery roads, while urban residents are encouraged to prepare for possible waterlogging in low-lying neighborhoods. Farmers, on the other hand, may find the rainfall beneficial for paddy cultivation, but excessive downpours could damage crops if proper drainage systems are not in place.

Outlook for the Coming Days

While the department has only released detailed forecasts for today and tonight, it has suggested that the overall monsoon pattern will continue to remain active in the coming days. The average positioning of the trough indicates that most provinces will continue experiencing cloudy weather and intermittent rainfall, with occasional episodes of heavy rain. The DHM has reassured that it will continue to monitor developments and provide timely updates to keep the public informed.
