The number of domestic and international devotees visiting the Panchadhura Bhagwati Temple located in Bardibas Municipality-4, Maisthan of Mahottari, has been steadily increasing in recent years.
The temple, which is regarded as a powerful Shaktipeeth, has become a significant religious tourism destination, attracting pilgrims from across Nepal as well as neighboring India. Devotees visit the shrine with strong belief that their wishes will be fulfilled after worshipping Goddess Bhagwati in a serene and natural environment.

Major Religious Gatherings on Tuesdays and Festivals
According to local authorities, the temple witnesses large crowds especially on Tuesdays and during major Hindu festivals. The increasing flow of pilgrims has turned the area into a vibrant center of religious and cultural activity. Akkal Bahadur Tamang stated that the temple has been playing a vital role in promoting local tourism as surrounding areas of Bardibas gradually develop into religious and tourism zones.
Ancient Origins and Local Legends
The temple holds deep historical and mythological significance. According to local traditions, the shrine was discovered in a dense forest area during ancient times, where a massive peepal tree once stood. Elders believe that five natural water spouts at the base of the tree gave rise to the original name “Panchadhara,” which later evolved into “Panchadhura” over time.
Local folklore also links the site with historical events involving Prime Minister Jung Bahadur Rana, who is said to have visited the area during a hunting expedition in 1933 BS. Legends further suggest mystical associations between the temple and a “white tiger” sighting, which is also referenced in historical accounts and literary works such as Seto Bagh by Diamond Shumsher Rana.

Strong Belief in Spiritual Power of Panchadhura Temple
The Panchadhura temple is widely believed to possess strong tantric and spiritual significance. Devotees frequently visit to perform rituals, offer sacrifices, and fulfill vows with the belief that their wishes will be granted. In recent years, religious ceremonies such as weddings, pujas, household rituals, and vow offerings have increased significantly at the temple premises. Couples also visit the site with the belief that marriage at the temple brings prosperity and happiness in married life, along with blessings for children.
Growing Tourism and Infrastructure Development
Due to its location along the East-West Highway, access to the temple has become easier for visitors, contributing to the rising number of tourists and pilgrims. Bardibas Municipality Mayor Pralhad Kumar Chhetri said that the municipality has allocated budget for the beautification of the Panchadhura temple complex, including the nearby pond area, to promote religious tourism.
Local resident Sudeep Karki emphasized the need to develop the temple as a proper tourist destination by highlighting its archaeological and historical importance. Similarly, Hira Gautam stated that efforts are underway to systematically develop the site as a religious tourism destination, including the renovation and management of the temple pond and surrounding infrastructure.

Ongoing Development and Preservation Efforts of Panchadhura Temple
The temple management committee has also been actively working on long-term development plans. Chairman Akkal Bahadur Tamang said that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared for the structured development of the temple area. He added that preservation and development of this historically significant site remain top priorities, with continued support from local stakeholders and community members.
A Growing Center of Faith and Tourism
With its blend of religious significance, historical legends, and growing infrastructure, the Panchadhura Bhagwati Temple has emerged as an important center of faith for Hindu devotees. Local residents and authorities believe that with proper management and promotion, the temple has strong potential to develop into a major religious tourism destination in the Madhesh region, contributing significantly to local economic growth and cultural preservation.
