Nepal Surges Past 107,000 Tourist Arrivals in April 2026

Nepal welcomed more than 107,000 international tourists in April 2026, reflecting a steady flow of visitors despite emerging global travel challenges. According to data released by the Nepal Tourism Board on Monday, a total of 107,934 foreign tourists entered the country during the month.

Regional Distribution Shows Strong South Asian Presence

The data highlights South Asia as the leading source region for tourist arrivals. Visitors from SAARC countries accounted for the largest share, with 33,432 arrivals, representing 31 percent of the total. Other Asian countries contributed 26,726 tourists, followed by Europe with 21,988 arrivals.

Tourists from Oceania reached 5,898, while the Americas accounted for 2,518 visitors. Similarly, West Asia contributed 1,697 tourists, and 315 visitors arrived from African nations. An additional 15,360 tourists came from other parts of the world, demonstrating Nepal’s increasingly diverse tourism base.

India and China Lead Source Markets

On a country-wise basis, India remained Nepal’s largest source market, with 25,196 tourist arrivals, accounting for 23.3 percent of the total. China followed as the second-largest contributor with 11,722 visitors. U.S.A. ranked third with 8,724 arrivals.

Other major source markets included Australia (5,327), Bangladesh (5,231), the United Kingdom (4,886), Germany (3,143), Malaysia (3,085), Russia (2,637), Myanmar (2,626), and France (2,443). The steady rise in arrivals from a wide range of countries indicates Nepal’s gradual shift from reliance on a few markets to a broader, more diversified tourism base.

Tourist Arrivals in April 2026

Comparison with Previous Years

Despite the encouraging figures, April 2026 saw a slight decline compared to the same month last year. In April 2025, Nepal recorded 116,490 tourist arrivals. However, the current figure remains close to pre-pandemic levels, as April 2019 had recorded 109,399 visitors. Tourism experts believe that while the sector has largely recovered from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, external global factors continue to influence travel trends.

External Challenges Impacting Tourism

Officials noted that escalating tensions in West Asia have affected international travel patterns, particularly by disrupting air connectivity and influencing travel confidence. These factors, along with reduced international promotional activities, appear to have contributed to the slight dip in arrivals during April.

Need for Strategic Promotion

Tourism stakeholders emphasize the need for stronger digital marketing strategies and targeted promotional campaigns to sustain growth. Positioning Nepal as a safe, attractive, and year-round destination remains crucial to increasing tourist inflows. Experts also suggest enhancing international outreach, improving air connectivity, and promoting diverse tourism products such as adventure, culture, and spirituality to attract a wider global audience.

Despite short-term fluctuations, the overall outlook for Nepal’s tourism industry remains positive. The continued diversification of source markets and the steady return of international travelers signal resilience in the sector. With strategic planning and sustained promotional efforts, Nepal is expected to build on this momentum and further strengthen its position as a leading global tourism destination.
