Nepal Strengthens Global Influence in Mountaineering Governance with Key UIAA Appointments
Officials from the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) have secured important positions in the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation, marking a significant achievement for Nepal’s mountaineering sector at the international level.
The appointments are being viewed as a strong recognition of Nepal’s growing leadership and technical expertise in global mountain governance, conservation and alpine policy development.

Rajendra Bahadur Lama Secures Full Member Status in the Board
NMA General Secretary Rajendra Bahadur Lama has been elected as a Full Member of the UIAA Board, granting Nepal a stronger voice in the federation’s highest decision-making platform.
According to UIAA office manager Stephanie Valdes, Lama’s selection reflects the confidence placed in Nepal’s institutional experience and contribution to international mountaineering affairs.
UIAA Commission Chair Greg Mosley confirmed that the appointment was formally endorsed during the UIAA Management Board’s Spring 2026 meeting.
As a Full Member, Lama will represent Nepal in policy-level decisions with full voting rights, strengthening the country’s influence in shaping global mountaineering standards.
Nepali Experts Appointed to Key UIAA Commissions
Alongside this major appointment, two senior representatives of the Nepal Mountaineering Association have also been selected for important UIAA commissions.

Senior Vice President Ishwari Paudel has been appointed to the UIAA Mountain Protection Commission, which focuses on environmental sustainability, climate change and conservation of alpine regions.

Similarly, NMA member Gokul Thapa has been appointed to the UIAA Mountaineering Commission, which works on climbing safety standards, technical training and expedition regulations.
Commission Roles Strengthen Technical Expertise Contribution
UIAA commission members are selected based on their technical expertise, field experience and contributions to mountaineering development.
These roles allow Nepali experts to contribute directly to global discussions on safety protocols, environmental protection, training systems and operational improvements in high-altitude climbing.
Stakeholders say the inclusion of Nepali professionals in these commissions ensures that Himalayan field experience is directly represented in global policy frameworks.
Full Member Status Enhances Nepal’s Global Voice
Within UIAA, Full Member status represents a national mountaineering association with full voting rights in governance and policy decisions.
The election of Rajendra Bahadur Lama is expected to further strengthen Nepal’s institutional presence and decision-making influence within the organization.
Experts believe this will help Nepal play a more active role in shaping international policies related to mountain safety, sustainable tourism and expedition management.
Nepal’s Himalayan Experience Gains Global Recognition
Nepal, home to eight of the world’s highest peaks including Mount Everest (8,848.86m), is widely regarded as a global hub for high-altitude mountaineering and adventure tourism.
The growing presence of Nepali experts in UIAA reflects international recognition of Nepal’s decades-long experience in expedition leadership, Sherpa support systems and mountain safety practices.
Boost for Future Collaboration and Mountain Policy Leadership
Mountaineering and tourism stakeholders say the new appointments will create stronger opportunities for international collaboration and knowledge exchange.

They also expect Nepal to play an even more influential role in promoting sustainable mountain tourism, climate-resilient alpine development and safer climbing standards worldwide.
With Rajendra Bahadur Lama’s election to the Board, Nepal has further cemented its position as a leading voice in global mountaineering governance.
