Speaking during a meeting of the International Relations and Tourism Committee under Nepal’s House of Representatives held at Singha Durbar on Wednesday, Minister Paudel said the government is shifting its focus from a short-term wellness travel campaign toward a long-term decade-wide strategy designed to strengthen Nepal’s position in the rapidly growing global wellness tourism market.

Government Shifts Focus from Wellness Tourism Year to Wellness Tourism Decade

During the parliamentary discussion, Minister Paudel urged lawmakers to broaden discussions beyond the concept of celebrating a single Wellness Tourism Year, emphasizing that Nepal should instead concentrate on a larger and more sustainable Wellness Tourism Decade initiative.

International Wellness Day

He said the government plans to use the upcoming fiscal year as a foundation-building period to create policies, infrastructure, and strategic investment opportunities needed to promote wellness tourism more aggressively in the coming years. According to the minister, the long-term strategy will allow Nepal to better utilize its natural strengths in spiritual healing, traditional wellness practices, yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, and nature-based healing experiences that are increasingly attracting international travelers worldwide.

Nepal Aims to Become Global Center for Wellness and Spiritual Tourism

Minister Paudel stated that Nepal has already made important progress in the wellness travel sector and now has the potential to become a major international hub for wellness-focused travel experiences. He highlighted Nepal’s deep connection with ancient traditions of healing, mindfulness, and spirituality, noting that practices such as yoga and meditation are among South Asia’s greatest contributions to the world and that Nepal remains their spiritual and cultural foundation. He stressed that Nepal’s unique identity as the “land of spirituality and divine heritage” provides a strong competitive advantage in attracting travelers seeking physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

Recognition of Global Wellness Day Seen as Major Achievement

The tourism minister also pointed to international recognition in the wellness sector, stating that April 15 has been acknowledged by the United Nations as World Wellness Day, describing it as a significant milestone connected to Nepal’s broader efforts in promoting wellness travel globally.

Calling the coming year a “fortification year,” Minister Paudel said Nepal will focus on strengthening its wellness tourism foundation before expanding the initiative into a larger decade-long campaign. He emphasized that Nepal must capitalize on its global image as the birthplace of spiritual traditions while developing wellness tourism products capable of attracting international investment and long-stay visitors.
