NMA, Russian Embassy Explore Landmark Russian Corner at International Mountain Museum

The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) held a high-level meeting with Aleksei Vladimirovich Surovtsev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Nepal, and senior embassy officials to discuss the proposed establishment of a Russian Corner at the International Mountain Museum (IMM) in Pokhara.

The NMA delegation, led by President Fur Gelje Sherpa, met with Ambassador Surovtsev at the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Kathmandu. The meeting focused on exploring the proposed initiative and its potential role in strengthening cultural, institutional and mountaineering-related ties between Nepal and Russia.

During the meeting, participants exchanged views on the concept of establishing a dedicated Russian Corner at the International Mountain Museum.

The proposed space is expected to provide an opportunity to highlight Russia’s mountaineering heritage, mountain culture, achievements and contributions to the global mountaineering community while creating a platform for greater cultural exchange between the two countries.

The initiative could also further enhance the International Mountain Museum’s role as a platform for showcasing the history, culture and achievements of mountaineering communities from around the world.

NMA Seeks Stronger Nepal-Russia Cooperation

The discussions provided a platform for constructive dialogue and the exchange of ideas on how the proposed initiative could contribute to stronger institutional and cultural relations between Nepal and the Russian Federation.

The NMA expressed its interest in continuing discussions with the Russian Embassy and relevant institutions to advance the initiative and explore opportunities for broader cooperation in the fields of mountaineering, tourism, culture and knowledge exchange.

The association said it looks forward to further collaboration with the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Nepal and the Russian House in Kathmandu to give the proposed initiative meaningful direction.

Senior NMA Officials Participate

The NMA delegation included General Secretary Rajendra Bahadur Lama, Secretary Chandan Thapa, Treasurer Sumi Moktan, Central Secretariat Members Thupden Sherpa, Nisha Bhote and Furi Geljen Sherpa, and Chief Administrative Officer Jinesh Sindurakar.

Anastasia KHOHLOVA, Counsellor and Director of the Russian House in Kathmandu, also participated in the meeting.

The participation of senior representatives from both sides reflected the shared interest in developing the proposed Russian Corner and expanding cooperation between Nepal and Russia through mountain-related cultural and institutional initiatives.

Potential to Strengthen Mountain Tourism and Cultural Exchange

The proposed Russian Corner could add another international dimension to the International Mountain Museum, which serves as an important center for preserving and presenting the history, culture and achievements of mountaineering.

For Nepal, stronger cooperation with Russian institutions could create additional opportunities for cultural exchange, mountaineering collaboration and tourism promotion, while providing Russian visitors and mountaineering communities with a dedicated platform to connect with Nepal’s mountain heritage.

The NMA and Russian representatives are expected to continue consultations on the proposed initiative, with the objective of developing a meaningful and sustainable partnership around the Russian Corner at the International Mountain Museum.
