Matthias Herzog, the son of French climber Maurice Herzog, who made history as the first person to summit Annapurna I at 8,091 meters, was honored during a special event organized by the Pokhara Tourism Council. The recognition took place in Pokhara today as part of a program to exchange greetings for the upcoming festivals, including Dashain and Tihar.
Gandaki Province’s Minister for Social Development, Bindu Kumar Thapa, and Pokhara Tourism Council Chairperson, Taranath Pahari, presented the honor to Matthias Herzog. Minister Thapa emphasized the government’s commitment to prioritizing tourism as a cornerstone of the country’s prosperity.
Council Chairperson Pahari expressed the council’s dedication to promoting tourism through collaboration with all stakeholders, while former Chairperson Bachhuram Tiwari highlighted the current challenges in the tourism sector, urging the government to adopt tourism-friendly policies to address these issues.
The event also featured remarks from Kaski Chief District Officer Bharatmani Pandey, General Secretary of Pokhara Tourism Council Jeevanraj Sapkota, Secretary Narayan Suvedi, and Vice President of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (Kaski), Jamuna Barsha Sharma.
Maurice Herzog’s ascent of Annapurna I on June 3, 1950, marked a historic moment in mountaineering, occurring three years before the first successful summit of Mount Everest. Annapurna Summit Day is now celebrated annually in honor of this achievement.
