Nepal is witnessing widespread disruption in air travel due to adverse weather conditions. The deteriorating climate, coupled with technical issues in the “in-route weather” system, has affected both domestic and international flights operating from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).
According to airport spokesperson Rinjee Sherpa, several domestic flights have been diverted today due to unfavorable climatic conditions. Additionally, flights to Bharatpur and Tumlingtar airports have been temporarily suspended. Pokhara Airport has halted arrivals, although departures are still operational. Sherpa confirmed that a Shree Airlines flight from Biratnagar to Kathmandu was diverted mid-route, while another flight departing from Bhairahawa to Kathmandu had to return to Bhairahawa due to poor weather.

Domestic Flight Disruptions and Diversions
The domestic flight schedule has been significantly impacted, causing inconvenience to travelers. Flights from key regional airports such as Biratnagar, Bharatpur, Tumlingtar, and Bhairahawa have been diverted or canceled. Sherpa emphasized that passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines before traveling to the airport, as sudden changes in flight schedules remain possible.
The in-route weather issues have particularly affected flights operating within the central and eastern regions of Nepal. Airport authorities reported that visibility at Tribhuvan International Airport currently stands at approximately 2,500 meters, further complicating flight operations.
International Flights Also Affected
International operations have not been spared from the disruption. Sherpa stated that Nepal Airlines’ flight bound for New Delhi was diverted due to deteriorating weather conditions. Similarly, Indigo Airlines’ flight was diverted to New Delhi, while Air India’s flight had to divert to Lucknow. Passengers traveling internationally are being urged to stay in close contact with airline offices for updates, as weather conditions continue to affect flight paths.
Meteorological Insights on Weather System
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Meteorological Forecasting Division, reported that a cyclone named “Montha” developed over the Bay of Bengal and entered India’s Andhra Pradesh on the night of Kartik 11. Since then, the system has gradually weakened and shifted northward and northwestward, eventually approaching Nepal’s mid-hill regions as a low-pressure area and moving eastward.
This low-pressure system is expected to continue influencing weather patterns across Nepal until Kartik 15. The Meteorological Department has forecasted that Bagmati, Madhesh, and Koshi provinces will experience significant weather disturbances during this period.
Rainfall Forecast and Safety Advisory
The system is likely to bring moderate rainfall to most parts of Madhesh and Koshi provinces, along with some areas of Bagmati Province. Certain regions may experience heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of localized flooding, landslides, and disruptions to transportation.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution, avoid non-essential travel, and follow official weather advisories. The Meteorological Department has emphasized preparedness measures, particularly for communities living in vulnerable areas prone to landslides or waterlogging.

Travel Disruptions Continue Amid Ongoing Precautions
The combined impact of adverse weather and in-route weather system issues has created challenges for both domestic and international passengers. Airports are implementing contingency plans, including diverting flights to alternate airports and rescheduling operations wherever possible. Airline staff and airport authorities are actively coordinating to minimize inconvenience, while travelers are advised to remain patient and vigilant.
The current situation serves as a reminder of Nepal’s vulnerability to sudden weather changes during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. Officials continue to monitor developments closely and provide updates on flight schedules, while urging citizens to prioritize safety over travel plans.
