Annapurna Conservation Area Celebrates 38th Anniversary with Grand Conservation Day Events

The Annapurna Conservation Area successfully celebrated its 38th anniversary and Conservation Day on December 14, 2024 (2081/08/29), with a series of vibrant programs organized by the Conservation Area Management Committee of Ghachok and supported financially by the Sectoral Conservation Office in Lwang. The event saw active participation from dignitaries, local leaders, and community members, highlighting the significance of conservation efforts in the region.

The celebration was graced by the Chief Guest, Honorable Member of the National Natural Resources and Fiscal Commission, Juddha Bahadur Gurung, and distinguished guests, including the Chairperson of Machhapuchhre Rural Municipality, Min Bahadur Gurung, and Member Secretary of the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), Dr. Naresh Subedi. Special guests included Dr. Chiranjivi Pokharel, Director of the National Trust for Nature Conservation, and Dr. Rabin Kadariya, Head of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project. The event also welcomed Ward Chairpersons, school representatives, and various organization officials, ensuring a wide spectrum of participation.

The festivities featured school-level quiz competitions, conservation-themed art contests, open dance competitions, and agricultural exhibitions, showcasing the community’s talent and commitment to conservation. Deurali Secondary School of Machhapuchhre-4 secured first place in the conservation art competition, while Udaya Secondary School of Machhapuchhre-7 excelled in the quiz competition. Ghachok’s team claimed the top spot in the women’s group dance contest, displaying cultural vibrancy and enthusiasm.

The agricultural exhibition highlighted innovative farming practices, with Prem Bahadur Sunar winning first place in the vegetable category and Devi Lal Pokharel leading in the fruit category. Youth agricultural entrepreneurs like Govinda Lamsal and Bal Bahadur Pun were honored with cash prizes for their contributions to sustainable farming.

Moreover, seven conservation management committees actively engaged in conservation for over a decade were recognized for their dedication, alongside incentives awarded to groups presenting outstanding tableaux. The event concluded with gratitude extended by Rabi Lal Pokharel, Chairperson of the Ghachok Conservation Area Management Committee, acknowledging the relentless efforts of the community, local leaders, and stakeholders in making the celebration a grand success.

With a blend of cultural, educational, and environmental programs, the event emphasized the importance of conservation and sustainable development, reaffirming the community’s commitment to preserving the natural heritage of the Annapurna region.
