Chauri Yak Exhibition and Marathon: A Thrilling Event at Kanchenjunga Base Camp

Sirijunga Rural Municipality is organizing a Chauri Yak exhibition at the Kanchenjunga Base Camp area, aiming to promote and preserve the Chauri Yak, which thrives in the region surrounding the world’s third-highest mountain. The exhibition will be held from Baishakh 13 to 15 during the Sirijunga Festival 2082, with a budget of NPR 800,000 allocated for the event.

During the event, awards will be presented to the best yak farmers. The top farmer will receive NPR 28,586, while a consolation prize of NPR 8,586 will also be given. The exhibition aims to address the declining interest in yak farming and highlight its significance, especially in the high Himalayan regions where yak farming is a key livelihood.

Chauri yaks are a major source of income for the communities in Taplejung’s high-altitude areas. The yaks provide milk-based products like ghee and churpi, which are sold for income. Additionally, yaks are in demand in China, where they are exported for over NPR 100,000 each. The municipality aims to encourage more farmers to engage in yak farming through this exhibition.

The event will also feature a challenging half marathon, set at an altitude of 4,500 meters in the Kanchenjunga Base Camp region. The marathon will cover a 24-kilometer route, with cash prizes for the top three finishers: NPR 208,586 for first place, NPR 108,586 for second, and NPR 58,586 for third. The festival will also include mountain cycling events, and the municipality hopes the event will raise awareness about climate change in the Himalayan region and promote adventurous trekking routes.
